For what they cost, you may as well buy new. By the time you’ve bought second hand & had them serviced, you’re into new money.

Yip. Also depends if its actually life jackets or buoyancy aids you are after?

Don't know how the stocks are now but we really struggled to get 3 buoyancy aids around a month ago but ended up with 3 from force 4 own windward brand (made by crewsaver) for under £30 each. Seem ok.

Lifejackets you've also to consider Co2 gas, service etc, especially buying second hand.....I probably wouldn't risk it unless you really know what you are doing.

Oh wow, yeah seems to be a lot of places out of stock.

I’ve been looking at Plastimo ones for sale at Decathlon but they haven’t got the xxl online..

I didn’t take servicing into account, I think I was of the thought process I’d rather get something of better quality second hand for the cost of something newer of less quality (if that makes sense)

Not really something you should cut corners on!!

Thanks for responses people, much appreciated

It depends if you are looking for life jackets or buoyancy aids.

Life jackets normally come in one size, and are a large inflatable 'bag' that's rolled up into a small tube shaped pouch which you wear around your neck. It's got a gas cylinder attached to it, that normally automatically goes off if it falls in the water instantaneously inflating the lifejacket. You hardly notice you are wearing one. They require servicing and looking after.

Buoyancy aids come in different sizes and are basically a block of foam shaped into a sort of jacket. There is no servicing and you could safely buy them secondhand.
They are much more bulky to wear (especially the higher newton ones which make you float more).

Thanks Jake,

It’s going to be a buoyancy aid, must admit I was questioning how a foam block could be serviced.

Bear in mind your not giving the same level of protection. Life jackets have additional buoyancy at the front and will leave an unconscious person with their face out of the the water. Buoyancy aids will just keep you buoyant. Not the area to save money I would say but you may need one over the other for specific reasons [emoji4]
