The longest trip on a rib (distance/time)

Just out of curiosity and to have in mind for future passage planning;

you rib pros,what was your longest trip on a rib? and in what kind of rib? did you stop halfway (if yes, was it stoppage in a harbour or in the middle of the sea?!)

I am planning to go from Solent to Brighton; it is a 60nm passage and the rib does nicely 35knots (with max speed of 50knots) so it could take 2-2.5hrs I suppose...

You can't do that "50knots" for a long time!

I can see why you think the journey may only take 2-2.5hrs based on the distance, and the speed you can do in the Solent - the moment you pass horse sand fort, the sea condition is so different that you have to keep play with the throttle meaning your average speed is like 15-20knots (if lucky).

So coming back to your question, the longest voyage was from Solent to brighton 65nautical miles, and took us 3hrs! on a Ribeye 650. We did the same trip in a pilothouse boat and it took 4.5hrs!

Hi its a very easy trip providing you know the waters off Selsey and keep well clear of Bognor Regis and the underwater outter mulberry approx 2 mile off Pagham, only feet underwater. Done this trip many of time on my Jet Ski. it takes around 2.5 hours including a refill at Littlehampton if needed, and a cruising speed of around 25mph. Littlehampton is my base and I will do this route around the Solent many of times.......... have a good trip

Round IOW (several times)
Southampton - Alderney - Southampton
Round Anglesey
Penzance - Isles of Scilly - Penzance
Lymington - Cherbourg - Lymington

An awesome trip There's only one campsite on Alderney and they do have fame tents that you can hire now. When we did this we all took our own camping kit, each

There are some situations that an auxiliary will not get you out of, whereas another boat will.
As well as the safety factor, it also makes for a great social afterwards.

I've Lymington to Alderney and back 3 times and Lymington to Guernsey and back one. Great fun! Always overnight in a B&B!!

Solent to Brighton a long way???
I did dartmouth to Brighton in a day few months ago. Fab it was too, but oh I ached.

With a few years experience I've based my long distance cruising on a maximum of 150 miles in a day. This is in a well founded 6m + boat. Dartmouth to Brighton was just over this and I couldn't have done a 2nd day, lucky day 2 was only 80 miles then er?

The cabin RiB is different. I've done 200 miles in a day and didn't feel too bad. I think 300 (limit of her fuel range) would be too much, although I did find myself contemplating it recently for a delivery trip to keal.

Seriously though Solent to Brighton is a nice trip. You'll get there and back in a day in fair weather. Or overnight in the (rather expensive) hotel and back the next day in the shorter days of spring or if it's say over a F 3-4. Loads of places for lunch and loads of cheap B&B's in town (bus / taxi).

Richard B and I once went to Alderney for lunch. That trip sold me on the scorpion hull and it's still on my list of RIBs I want to own at some point.

It's a great trip. Have done it many times. Normally go from Rye to Cowes and back the next day which is about 95 miles (mostly in a 6.5 redbay). The sea state when you exit the Solent can be a surprise as it doesn't need much of a SWesterly to make a big swell. The Loo passage needs care as at low tide there are breaking waves if you get in the wrong place.. As far as heading West on your way back from Brighton I recommend only doing it in very light winds as the Sw wind kicks up waves very close together and journey will painful!

What's the size of your boat? I would say you would be looking at 2.5/3 hours if you don't stop

August 2013, covered about 1,000 miles in 10 days. The 3rd leg, from Bangor to Killybegs was 175 miles, and took in excess of 12 hours.
