I have just bought a 2nd hand Scorpion (6.6m) and although was built in late 1998, was the best decision I have ever made. Very different to my last boat not surprisingly (Valiant). Perhaps we should start a Scorpion owners only thread?

Julian I understand that they are gluing a lot of tubes on boats. Maybe they are doing well. But for 45K I doubt it very much and this is the reason they stopped the production of the 7.50 here. Greeks do not like to burn Euros (especially these days) and you can find other boats much cheaper in Greece.
If the 10 mtr Scorpion is 100K+ then I doubt very much that it will be a success as you can buy for less the Hummer Hull 10 mtrs, MOSTRO 10 mtrs and now they are manufacturing another 10 mtr cabin RIB in Crete.
All of the above RIBs have 4 berths, dinning area, shower/toilet, chart area and wide (actually VERY WIDE) deck. If you ask me they defeat the object of a RIB but there you go.
Price wise with 2ins Yanmars inboard 200s or 250s diesels they go for about 80000 Euros (or a little bit more) ex trailer i.e. 50,000 pounds or there abouts and they are good solid made boats!!
So expenssive boats (no matter how good they are) may have a problem selling in the MOST COMPETITIVE and DEMANDING market in Europe.

I know JF the outlet is on my way to Sounion from Athens (on the coast way) near Agia Marina area.
However, as far as I know from sources they have sold only one boat so far although the guy who runs the shop told me that he sold 20. When I made the comment that the boats were very expenssive I was told that they are expenssive because they are all made out of KEVLAR (is this correct??)
In any case these boats are quite expenssive, do not have adequate storage spaces, they are not appropriate for RIB Camping (as is popular in Greece to sleep on the RIB in the summer for 2/3 days at the time), the fact that they can do 100000 billion knots per hour is immaterial as no one can cruise that fast and I cannot see much future for them here.

That's correct, they are built entirely in kevlar, very extravagant,
I think the true figure they've sold is aroud 6, I've seen a few leave his workshop with the greek agent! he's had 7,9,10 metre models to my knoweledge. so some greeks are prepared to pay the price, but then there's no better way of going quickly(If that's what you want from your rib) than having a Mannerfelt designed running surface!

spoke to a chap who works for Ribtec today, one of the UK's most respected rib builders ? Anyway he says that there has been some sort of tie up with Ribeye and guess what

some of the manufacturing process is moving to guess where ? Now theres an irony

answers on a post card

Ribeye/Ribtec, made in SA

That is correct, but how about this. I have heard from a reliable source that a dealer in Poole, (might be ex dealer now) was absolutely horrified of the build quality of one of his stock Ribeye boats.

It seems that in certain areas of the hull, most of the laminatations were missing, you could almost see through it. Just the gel coat and skin coat.

Wow I am agreeing with Dirk. Ribeye quality is not good, and I imagine you will see alot on the secondhand market V soon.

If Ribtec did move the production of the ribs to Ribeye then this will not improve the quality at all which is a shame as presently the quality of the boats is difficult to knock.

I personally think that buying a secondhand Scorpion is a sensible thing to do, providing you don't gt ripped off on the price . I guess the same applies to any other premium boat marque out there. They may cost a lot but they represent a stable investment. A secondhand Scorpion is a loy more desirable than a secondhand Ribeye and will hols its value .

CH didn't I read somewhere that the eurocommuter was going to cost you 130k. How much would that be worth 4 years later>

Drove Wavehumpers 6.5 Scorpion this afternoon around the Solent for a couple of hours. No idea what the speed was as the speedo is broke (hint Stu) but it handled very nicely and if I owned her I would be well pleased. The Opti 150 on the back makes an ideal package. Quality shows when you look inside at the mouldings and overall finish, which despite being kept on a marina birth is still like new, well the bits I cleaned were anyway. Yep nice rib, fast, felt safe and well built, which might explain the high second hand values for these boats.

Charles,

I'm rather late in the day replying, but the 7.5m Scorpion in question was mine from new.

I sold it in late 1999 when I moved up to a diesel.

Braking News

As a matter of interest - 51% of Prestige South Africa has been bought by Ribeye UK - in other words they are produced
now in South Africa.
There is no double confirmation on this yet but I think that you may find it interesting

????? The person I sold it to still had it until recently - I saw it in Cowes last August. The boat appeared to be orginal other than seats reupholstered in a different colour, and well looked after.

Allen
