Rescue knife mounting

I want to carry a rescue knife, ideally on the transom - any suggestions which will allow reasonably quick release of the scabbard to take the knife off the boat?

Edit: oh you mean at the end of the day when you want to take it home. Could you not get a second scabbard to keep it in?

Best option is a small sharp knife on you, maybe a folding knife not a feck off machette.
Then buy two cheap a chips dive knifes and mount one on the boat. Leave the spare at home and use the spare sheath to move it about.

I would recomend against a bungy lanyard on the knife, if you drop it do you really want it coming back to you at a rate of knots ?

how about a short string wrist lanyard.

If you are doing dinghy reascue might want to consider carrying some wire cutters

The best option would be to visit a dive shop, they have selections of knifes with scabbard locks and all sorts.

When storing the knife permanately in scabbard I always use a thin coat of silacon grease all over the blade.

Nice thing is, the larger hard plastic scabbards can be drill and screwed to your surface of choice.

I had a dive knife in a plastic scabard mounted to the underside (e.g. the wooden base) of a jockey seat. So it was simply a case of flipping open the jockey seat, reaching in and pulling out the knife.

Thanks for the responses

I have a folding knife on a lanyard with a carabiner to the D-ring on the lifejacket harness - I was thinking of a backup - the Race Rescue Knife with a hook end

on the transom specifically to deal with ropes and netting round the prop.
Looks like I'll have to make an off-boat scabbard out of the inside of a bog roll.

I have one in each pocket, a couple tucked under the pillow, two in the glove box, a dozen or so hidden around the engine bay, three in the anchor locker, seven gaffered to the back of each seat, one tie-wrapped to the stern drive tie bar, and just for good measure, and in case I have trouble putting my hands on one, I usually keep a spare in my top shirt pocket (next to the RayBan's)

Do you think I should have more?

perhaps to be cautious i would also have one in each sock so you are properly tool'd up,
