GPS the first thing I see is a disclaimer
at the risk of starting another rant at a certain make of allegedly waterproof gps I had to go out in the rain again this week with a commercial customer and when the gps saw the raindrops the keypad & display went down again. Grotty day- bad viz and a tad windy. And in Morecambe bay if ya get it wrong you can be stuck on drying banks miles out to sea
The steering compass worked fine however with no electrical supply needed, just an awareness of where we actually were in the murk and the laminated diagram we carry with the courses from mark to mark in the bay (and the very comforting knowledge that we had a hand held gps and spare batteries in the emergency tub if I got it wrong )

just to bring my problem to a close:
Yes it was the two speakers on the compass side of the console.
I have now swung the compass using a hand bearing one to check on transits i know the bearing of and with a slight tweaking of the compensators now have a compass that i can steer with.
