Jolly Sailor, Ashlett Creek?

I went up Ashlett Creek (Southampton Water) over the weekend, and found that the Jolly Sailor was closed and boarded up. Anyone know why? Shame as its another pub gone from the shore-line.

been closed maybe a month now!! another failed new owner i believe! Rumour was it got smashed up on last nite by bitter previous owners but its only hear say!!!

Good news! I had an email this week to say that the Jolly Sailor is back up and running

For anyone heading that way the Ashlett Sailing Club have got some navigaton notes and a schematic chart of the creek which should be useful.

As fas as I know there is no charge for mooring, so maybe this ought to become the (admittedly tidal) RIBnet HQ instead of the lightship!

I was there on Sunday afternoon and can confirm that the Jolly Sailor has re-opened.

Sounds like an ideal location for a Ribnet meeting to support the new owners. Make a change from Yarmouth. Just need a weekend mid day high water.

The food is good there, but you definitely need the right tide.

I actually drove the car there. I knew it shut a while ago and was just 'snooping' around.

I didn't go in but they were serving food - can't vouch for the quality but worth a punt.

However, many moons ago I enjoyed a sunny beer or two out on the benches outside - it's very peaceful spot and when the Scorpion is next in the water it will venture over there!!

Personally, I think we adventerous boat types should support these types of places - use them or lose them, I say!

(obviously these days I'll be on lemonades, as my 6.9m rib with a top speed of 6.9 knots hasn't arrived yet.......)

Am going to try this tomorrow as the weather and tides are looking good. Planning on arriving at about 1330. Does the pub have its own pontoon?

No just berth on the town quay, the pub is effectivly on the quay. As JK said there is never anyone there to collect money so I assume it is free.

On a big spring the tide floods the quay. The wooden piles stop RIBs from being pushed onto the quay itself, but it looks a bit surreal when you come out of the pub and the bench on the quay is about 15m to seaward of you have to wade out to it and the boats.

Had agreat day out, watched the start of the Fastnet race and then picked up some friends and went up to the Jolly Sailor.

The facilities for the boat were excellent, not a massive jetty but enough to get about 5/6 boats tied up without having to raft up.

We had our lunch sat on tables on the walkway out to the boats, under the new covers. An excellent way to dine and enjoy views. The standard of the pub was very good.

Seven of us had lunch and all had different meals. I would say the standard was variable!
I had belly of Pork, the taste was excellent as was presentation, but very fatty. The lamb roast was overly grisley. The other meals were good, including portion size.

So I would recommend for the stunning scenary, good location and boat facilities, but food selection needs care.

only at peak high tide really, maybe an hour either side?

it's lovely It's very relaxing I just got into talking shit about music with a local for too long and was stranded. The funny thing was I was loking at the water out of a window and it seemed alright. I got outside and there was no water left in the creek I'd been glancing at the mill pond
