Having a bad day

Just ran over another half submerged lobster pot line despite being plenty clear of pot marker. Lifted outboard to check and all ok although it snagged lower leg, now can't get outboard down , crawled at 3 knots to studlnd bay and tied up buoy awaiting sea start and it's fing cold. Bugger,

There's usually an emergency lower screw in the side of the saddle usually 1/4 or 1/2 turn with a flat blade screwdriver through a hole in the side of the saddle if you can reach it from the boat might save you a wait

Yep and I think you have to turn it clockwise to release . You did on my yamaha anyway .

Yes, sea start chap turned up and with some effort getting to a certain screw managed to release the pressure and outboard went down OK.

Ha Ha , not the end of the story, the sea start rib developed a fault, it was stuck in reverse gear, he could not fix it, might have been a cable issue to gear box, anyway I towed him back to Poole Harbour. see pic

back on dry land, cold and hungry

Better yet, hope you made a few bucks off them as a tow is more valuable than a minor repair on the water

Maybe you should have insisted they get onto your boat for the tow, then claim ownership of their boat. (Heard they sometimes do that in the USA to get more money.)

Yes it was amusing, I was more than happy to tow them back, especially considering Pete the sea start chap had spent about 30 mins laying flat half hanging off the rib with his arm submerged to get to the screw which was naturally stuck with salt and took some time to release, I expect his arm was numb with cold.

A good service from sea start, its worth being a member, yes i could have called RNLI if I hadnt been a member of sea start but I wasnt in imediate danger so hence preferred to call sea start. And I learned more about the hydralic systems so a bonus.

Or I guess you could have limped back at 3 knots anyway? And probably got back to poole about the same time (accounting for time to call out, time to repair, time towing sea start?). I wouldn't dream of calling out the RNLI if my boat was on a mooring and I had a way to get ashore. Obviously Seastart exist so you don't need to worry about the logistics of getting it fixed / safely ashore.
