Building a jetty in the sea

Anyone know the rules or regulations about building a jetty or mini pier into the sea. Does it need planning ?

As far as I know it's governed by Crown Estates. So that would be my first port of call for your area.

Certainly does in Scotland. Also there has to be an environmental assessment from, I think, Marine Scotland, so that you don't dump potentially toxic stuff into the sea. For instance, you may have to wash any material before you dump it into the sea, I kid you not.

I would imagine that, if you're going to go below low water, you'll have to ask the Crown Commissioners too, as it's their land.

I think that's a far from exhaustive list.

Plus who ever owns the land above the LWL. And if its in a port area probably the port authority...

Always thought the Queen owned the area between Low and High water.

Just a lot! It's virtually impossible around these parts. Dropping a mooring block requires handing over a kidney. :-(

I suspect that even if you could get all the necessary approvals , they would include strict conditions of maintenance ( ie navigation lights ) .

I used to work at a firm that had it's own jetty on the Thames . Any lighting failure was considered to be a major emergency requiring immediate rectification !

Thanks guys. Local council search at the address showed me the house next door applied for planning permission for its jetty and balcony with steps to the jetty. So a council thing is definitely needed amongst what ever else

In the late 80s, Peter De Savary was chucking money (not his) around down here by the bucket load. Everyone, including all of our councils, were falling over themselves to get a piece of him. However, with all over that clout, he couldn't get permission to put a jetty into the water in front of his spectacular farmhouse on the Percuil River (St Mawes). It made total sense, as he was at the quiet end of the river and he could've boated over to his office at Falmouth docks and parked the helo.

The rule that was quoted to me... by none other than the head ghillie to the mighty Duke of Argyl clan ..when he caught me fishing for big silver “mackerel” on the shore..at low tide ..near Inverary

He was going to book me for illegal shore fishing .. until I slipped him a fiver. I had to come off the water though.. I then waited until he had gone..before recovering my catch of two lovely sea trout.. stashed in the bushes

This is a true version of what happened.. but I have no idea if the Ghillie’s quote is true .. I wasn’t going to argue with him.
