New Rib/introduction/advice majiggy

Hi all! New to the forums and have just bought my first RIB, not a new one but got to start somewhere ey?

Well, I now own a 5.3m Tornado with a 75hp 2 stroke mariner! Arrived today from another member of the forums and am very happy with it so far, don't think I'll get the chance to use I this season sadly but that means more time to work on the small things!

Got a few pictures below and some questions to go with them, plan to use this thread as sort of an update thread as I do the odd jobs to make her look prettier 😊

So first question is... why are these pictures uploading sideways!?

Jokes aside first question is on the pictures below you can see that on the starboard tube the seat/grip pads are missing, now I have the pads and I have adhesive but any advice on how to apply them?

Second question *drum roll*... looking at the picture of the console you can probably see its looking a little worse for wear, is there a certain type of paint or method of going about repainting the console?

Third question... the floor in the rib is alright condition but very dirty, any advice on cleaning this?

Fourth question... the tubes look like they are in good condition but need a clean, have a cleaner but don't know if it's just a rub on the tubes and wipe it off job or what? Will get a picture of the cleaner tomorow.

Now your necks probably ache from looking at these lovely sideways pictures! Any advice on doing anything to the boat would be greatly appreciated as I am a newbie to owning one of these (have ribbed a lot as safety and using other kinds of boats) so have a rather limited knowledge on them at the moment!

Many thanks
Jack

Well Done; that boat was a bargin.

It started off here in sunny Margate... Came to me from the dive club that bought it from my mum and dad's neighbour !

Sorry to say don't think you'll clean the tubes up they are faded but have several years left in them. Previous owner to you did the seam tape and some patches I believe.

There is a gluing thread currently active... have a read... its all about prep.

I'm only seeing the bit behind the wheel. Is the whole console like that or just behind the wheel? If its just that bit then personally I might be tempted to add some form of custom "Plate" to it... If its the whole thing then that wont work. You can paint them but its cr@p so your best approach is flow coat but if you've never flow coated its a bit of a learning curve to get a flat surface.

Oxalic acid based cleaning products seem preferred round here.

Hang fire... Are Tornado toobs PU rather than PVC/ Hypalon? You may need some specific PU advice which may be trickier to find...? I may be making that up - just something makes me think they are PU...

Whats going on with it? Most people who need to flow a console is because its been drilled and filled to oblivion. From what I could see this isn't drilled and filled...

Maybe it was painted and now that paint is knackered? Or maybe its UV damage but why the console and not the toobs. Does it clean up with solvent (e.g. MEK) or polish up with T-Cut?

tornados are PU unless they have been retubed . every one that I have seen that has had new seam tapes put on has fallen apart within a year or two of having the seam tapes replaced which is why we refuse to replace the seam tapes on tornados or any other PU tubes

I saw this boat a year ago and as only an experienced amateur put no more than 2-3 years left in the tubes.

Ed at Ribtube did a tube on one of these for me recently. Exact same boat. I therefore assume he'll be able to give you a price off the top of his head... 07595 590486. If you intend to keep the boat (and i believe it to be worth keeping) worth having an idea what to put aside each month !!

Paul Tilley is also a tube man (/\ above), and also in Dartmouth. He'll tell you he's from somewhere else but it's near to Dartmouth.

Otherwise heed his advise on life span and enjoy the boat for a year and sell it whilst tube problems don't deflate the value (get the pun, er ?).
