Hello from Wirral

Hi Fellow Members, my wife and I have just joined this group. We haven't got a boat yet but we have done a few recent organised rib trips, one from Gairloch in Scotland and one from Menai in Anglesey. We have both got the bug and seeing as our spare time is spent in outdoor activities like walking, camping etc, we have decided to get a boat.
This forum is great for giving us some direction because to be quite honest, we haven't got a clue what to buy yet.
I am going to do a PB2 course before I go near anything on the water and also so that I can test drive anything that we may look at buying, then I'll do a VHF course once we get a boat.
I assumed that to get any speed up on the water, we'd need a minimum 250hp engine but looking on this site, it appears that a 100hp upwards is going to be sufficient for just two of us on a boat. We have been looking at Avon SR4s and hope to get something for under £10k.
We have probably picked the wrong time of year to buy a boat but we are not going to rush into things.
We had been dreaming of buying a motor home when we both retire in ten years or so to circumnavigate the British Isles by Coast road but we are now thinking that we can do this in a better way by rib and camping.
It's a long way off and plenty of time to get skilled before we do anything that adventurous. We'd just thought that we'd say hi and hope to pick up some knowledge from all of you out there who obviously have a great deal of experience that we can learn from.

Welcome to Ribnet! The Scouser S.R Combo seems to work well! Take your time choosing, and try to get out on few Boats,to see what suits you and your needs is always good advice.

You certainly don't need 200gee gee to go fast.

If you put 100 gee gee on an Sr4 apart from ripping the random off it would be leathal to steer.

Maximus, Shiny and Chris, thanks for responding too. As you can gather I haven't got a clue what I'm doing, with what type of engine etc, so all advice is gratefully received.

n what makes you think any of us know any better

best advice I can offer is take your time n don't jump into anything before you've had a good look around, there's plenty of good advice to be had on here so don't be afraid to ask, just don't let the banter distract you tooooooo much

Welcome to RIBnet Phil and Jane. Plenty of us in your neck of the woods willing to assist you in person and loads of experience here on the forum. As others have said, don't be tempted to rush out and spend your £10k; you can pick up a good package for that money.

Many of us launch from Caernarfon and do our thing around Anglesey and the Menai Straits so if you're ever down in that neck of the woods, give us a shout and I'm sure as a collective we can introduce you to a few examples of RIBs that might suit you?
