Pin Hole Leak

Hello All

I seem to have acquired a very small pin hole leak on my new sib. the hole only seems to leak when i push it. Do you always have to use a patch or can you just put some of the glue on top of the hole?

Do you put this directly on the hole?

Yes, deflate, de-grease and put a tiny blob on and leave overnight.

Might work but most holes on a SIB are pin holes and they will still lose plenty of pressure over a few days.

Generally launch at sea off the beach.

I would suggest a urethane glue like Aquasure/Aquaseal/McNett (all the same) or possibly the product above (may be the same too). As Max says, prepare well. Before you apply the glue, partly deflate the SIB and then apply a blob over the taped around and marked hole. Then remove more air from the SIB, causing the hole to suck some glue inside - hopefully forming a mushroom shaped wedge inside the tube. Top up the blob so that the external glue butts up to the tape. Give it 24 hours and apply pressure!

I made the mistake of trying to launch my boat from a pebble beach without using launching wheels

The only other thing i have noticed is when deflating my rib from one value i seem to loose pressure in the other side. almost like the two sections are connected. is this normal?

Sorry I have many newbie questions

Pressure loss - one of two things:

1. Your internal baffles/sections have ruptured and you have one large open tube now. This is the case if the tubes deflate completely.
or
2. Deflating one section DOES cause the others to loose a LITTLE pressure as the baffles move. Normal.

I shall give it another test. The boat is brand new so will contact zodiac if it is number 2.

2. Is normal and very likely. When inflating/deflating it is essential to do each compartment to 50% or so then top each up to 100%.

All tubes are 'connected' as such and will affect each other.

I have been following the instructions that do say to fill each compartment in sections however just noticed that when deflating it appeared to effect the other compartment. In an emergency when one compartment becomes damaged surely the other section should stay inflated otherwise you will sink???

It will, but the baffle is a flexible cone that can go either way between the tubes thus affecting pressure and volume in each one.

If it is just a pin hole, deflate and clean as suggested and put a drop of Super Glue on it. Anything more and it should get a patch with the proper two part glue.

If you ever blow a tube on the water you should have a pump onboard to top up the one next to it to a higher pressure.
