Isles of Scilly?

Probably going to get shot down on this one but has anyone taken a SIB from Cornwall to the Scilly isles??

It strikes me as very doable but falling into "challenge" territory - you know, rowing an armchair to France sort of stuff. If there was a 5m RIB going as well I'd say "why not?". Ultimately the issues are Weather times Duration. It's a long haul in a chop, never mind a blow. The Scillies look like rewarding SIB territory - I may just bring mine there sometime...

RIBase
No reason why not if you carry out the correct preparation and pick your time.

On the way back from the Scillies in 2005 we came across a couple of kayaks. It was glassy smooth though!

I guess asking here is the start of that "correct preparation".

I'll stick my neck out there too, especially as I'm new to this SIBing game... but why the hell not. I really don't like curtailing adventure in the face of 'what might happen'...

Would I take my 2 kids and wife, no, but would I do a challenging adventure with an experienced mate - of course.

I used to hang off the sides of very high, very ice covered mountains with a couple of axes and an experienced mate... remote, rescue difficult, risk of death moderate... best days of my life... would I take my wife and kids? No... was it fun/exhilarating hell yes!

Plan, plan, plan... and plan some more... take all the safety precautions you can and someone with the appropriate knowledge and go for it!

Or... sit at home and read books/websites about people who did ;-)

As stated ALL DOWN TO CONDITIONS...
eminently doable, the problem is getting a long enough weather window to make it worth while...ie enough time to enjoy your stay, and not getting stuck over there waiting for conditions to get back!
There was I believe someone who nearly swam it last year!...although I don't think they made it...owing to the weather
I've seen people who have rowed across, and gone in smallish craft...I would say...At the risk of upsetting the SiB contingent..(and I enjoyed SIBing for many years) a small suitably powered RIB is much better in real Offshore "Open Water" stuff.

I'm sure it's been done, and will be again...if you decide to have a go...I'd go in company and...take a few days off!

If it floats, someone has done it.
A couple from Fal canoed over over the Xmas.

Get your timing right and it'll be an armchair ride.

You should be able to launch a sib from Sennen Cove, which would save the 7Nm hike from PZ to Lands End each way.

A SIB has a useful "bail out" option though - in that it can all be packed into a bag and come home on the ferry!

You'll want to make sure you understand your fuel requirements etc - it would be very embarrassing to run out part way there and make good headlines "Scilly Inflatable Dinghy Rescue"...

Its certainly not a trip for the feint hearted, but its a proper adventure - good luck and make sure to tell us how your trip goes.

If our OP doesn't possess the 'way of it all' to manage his fuel, then maybe he should stay closer to home.

Guess what?! They even sell petrol on the islands!

We're never without spare.

The Mk1 eyeball tends to be pretty reliable.

Can you buy fuel on St. Martins now?

Mk1 nostrils detected that one and ripped the piss accordingly, along with the self folding radar tower.

When the spare goes missing, there's always the spare spare. Full tanks + 50Ltrs each spare is standard.

Thanks to all of you that replied to this! I thought I was thinking crazy thoughts but now I know that other folks have crazy thoughts too so i'm ok! I'm a complete greenstick & newby, only got the boat recently & have done my level 2 course but had little experience yet so i'll be spending this year getting less green but I've got it into my head that I want to take it to the scilly's & intend to do it when i'm ready. Thanks so much to you all for your advice, wise words & offers, i'm very grateful & will flag it up again when the time comes! Loving this forum btw, everyone's genuinely helpful & gratious, happy to have found it Thanks again!

Also I've been reading Alain Bombard's book 'The Bombard Story', where he takes a boat about the same size as mine across the Altantic, that man had some balls?! Maybe I should stop reading..
