It strikes me that the thing you might fall foul of is length rather than weight. I real on gov.uk that you can't to anything longer than 7m behind a car. 6.3 for the boat + a bit of trailer between the car and the boat might put you over?

The 7m regulation states that its a maximum length excluding drawbar and rear overhang.

Rear over hang is anything behind the rear axel and drawbar is pretty much what ever you want it to be (It has never been defined in law what the drawbar is ) at the front of the trailer. In practice it means the 7m length is the least restrictive element of the regs.

Mine is completely legal and measures a tad over 10m from tow hitch to number plate. Think about Glider trailers, they are legal but can measure over 12m.

Yeah, I did think there must be an awful lot of illegal trailers on the road.

Wow, didn't know that about the overhang "anything behind the rear axle" and Drawbar length "never been defined in law". Is this true of caravans as well (or just boat trailers) or is there some other definition of what constitutes a "trailer"?

I think it originates from the wording used to define the length of HGV trailers, so yes, it applies to all trailers (and caravans) on the road.

The drawbar thing is interesting (in a nerdy, I want to pull a big boat kind of way ). Most people define it as the start of the A frame shape, on my trailer, it accounts for nearly 3m alone. Caravans dont have big A frames, but they do have huge rear overhangs which allows some pretty big rigs.
