Good friend of mine had an 04 MG something or other until a few weeks ago. He's a mechanical sort, so did most of the work him self. However, he eventually worked out he would save money buying a brand new Fiesta on finance when he looked at what he'd spent on parts over the last couple of years (was doing 20k miles a year). I personally found the seats horrendously uncomfortable even on very short journeys. I also remember an afternoon we spent trying to get the bonnet open. The bonnet catch stopped working - a known fault on this model - was so well known even the factory knew so they had installed an emergency hatch in the wheel arch so you could poke your arm in and try and retrieve the disconnected cable, give it a pull and open the bonnet.

So my third option of a 2.0 ford fiesta st (the 2004-2007ish model) is looking like the favourite!

Erm... have you checked the price of insurance for the cars you're looking at?

Cheap very underrated car is the 1.7l Ford Puma.
They are 125hp but can be upped to 150 quite easily.

Although based on the Fiesta, it's a very different drive. It's my every day hack and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Still gives 40mpg even if I drive like I stole it
I believe it was sport car of the year in 2000....

Just another cheap option for you
