Waterproof phone with camera

My mate has just got one of these;

Samsung B2100

A good spec and not a bad price, no gps though, however when I had gps on my Nokia 5140 it was pants. If my mates turns out to be ok I'll get one and post stuff.

Just been reading up on the Land Rover phone - it really is as tough as they claim - the only way they managed to break it was to drive a forklift over it!!!

Oh and it's got GPS and is very waterproof - sounds ideal for RIBs!!!

apparently available to order though I haven't tried.

I have heard some questionable reliability reports on the Sonim XP1, so I don't know what the XP3 models will be like?

Will be interesting to see if Sonim can market it themselves here in a sim free form, still looks like a cracking phone even on contract from tesco.

The Sonim gurantee in the US is a no-questions-asked-replacement for 3 years. This sounds like they are pretty confident most of the phone wil last foe 3 years.

So far looks ok;
No Multimedia messaging
GPS is a java application I thought it would just give a position but you get a map too.
Camera is good 2 meg has a flash too (the torch function also)
Text editor a little clumsy
Generally well made much better than the Nokia 5140 I had once.
The PC back up tool isnt working yet but most the others I've used are near to useless anyway. Will give Land Rover some feedback on this.

Will compare with my mates Samsung Solid/B

Land Rover Phone

Bought a Land Rover SP1 phone (Sonim XP3 re-branded) some months go now...thought I post up some thoughts in case anyone else was looking to gamble £300

On the face of it...tough, waterproof, shockproof...it says it is and it looks it. No reason to doubt to date Loud clear reception including the phones own speakerphone function: LOUD it certainly is. Much louder than any other phone I've had by a long way. Great in noisy environments Non-slip rubberised case...the opposite end of the spectrum to my wet-bar-of-soap design iPod Touch Looooong battery life Can be had in a bright orange colour

However, here's the list of faults or shortcomings (however you want to phrase it)

* The locked keypad doesn't lock out numbers starting in '9' or '1', ie emergency calls. I've made two inadvertant 999 calls.
* The 'end call' button is faulty. Only works when it wants to and when it wants to it's slow witted.
* The pc sync function doesn't.
* On occasion, the bluetooth function doesn't work at all. When it does work, the bluetooth function cycles connected and unconnected on a 20 second or so cycle. Other times it works ok but it's slow witted. Pressing 'end call' on my LR Disco 4 ends the call on the phone about 30 seconds later. These are known problems with the phone manufacturer (they're not vehicle faults)...no fix in sight (it was going to be early Nov, then end Nov, then year end, now un-timed).
* The phone book function - advertised as allowing the phone book to be sucked up into any LR product thus enabling easier calls out from a LR vehicle or Caller ID on the vehicle facia screen for incoming calls - doesn't work and there is no fix in sight. In fact, there may never be a fix at all even though it remains marketed as a feature.
* All of the above is relevant to Freelander, Disco 3 and Disco 4.

I bought my phone direct from LandRoverPhone Ltd (a completely independant company from LR themselves - the tie is purely a marketing thing). My view after probably a dozen calls to them now is that they are not technical, merely a medium for taking orders. They promise follow ups and calls from those at Sonim but the calls either never happen or, on the one occasion when I got a call from some guy in India, what the guy tells me is subsequently discounted by Land Rover Phone Ltd as mis-informed! Bizarre Land Rover Phones tell me there are others with all the problems I describe.

I don't have much patience for expensive toys that don't do what they say on the tin. Or patience for the companies that make them. However, I'm sort of sticking out here for software patches in the hope that it'll all come together I must be mad or going soft in my old age. Or both.

Land Rover Phones and I remain in negotiation

Chewy...My previous Samsung worked on the basis locked is locked but before that my phones were either flip or slide so it didn't matter. The LR XP1 is the only phone I've ever had that's made inadvertent 999's

Anything other than locked means locked kind of sounds a bit like the thread on here about automatic EPIRB's going off all over the shop.

Maybe I've been unlucky or expecting too much?

Now on phone number 3!
First one software completely failed, on switch would illuminate keypad but no boot up
Second one arrived charged but could not then be charged any more.

All 3 phones have so far not been able to be used with different downloads of the PC tools application to edit phone book etc on PC.

I would not reccomend this phone to anyone who is used to multimedia or evolved text editors (fairly primitive compared to nokia) In terms of the 3 year gurantee - this is good however it's clear they need it!

GPS is ok however it outputs a decimal gps position, mapping java appaagain ok but primitive. A friend of mine has the samsung solid and likes it.

Had my Landrover (Sonim) for 4 months now, got it free with an Orange contract at Tesco.

Whilst I agree with some of the problems about its capabilities, so far it has not malfunctioned at all. I thought the texting was very primitive, until I enabled the predictive text option, which is buried in the handbook.

My gripe would be the lack of picture messaging, though it can be blue toothed and lack of video capability.

Still think it's a good phone "does what it says on the tin"
