JK I have found additional updates today which suggests the company are taking the waterproofing seriously- http://durrocomm.com/markblog/index.php?itemid=8

Perhaps if they are seeking more test there are some of us here who would welcome an opportunity to test their new phone in the marine market as they are seeking retailers and distributors-

i'm eager to find a phone thats fairly waterproof because that will also make it dust proof, i have big problems with grp particials getting into every phone i've had, finish up with a load of static dust where the screen used to be

Quite cool-I asked on that blog if they were going to salt water immersion test them and they are going to then post back.

Interested too. My Optio camera flash died due to water ingress after loads of use von the rib

When we were on the way to Weymouth for the BIBOA cruise and lost the radio in very rough conditions we used Josh's phone to call coastguard. After two calls in rain and spray (we had to take it out of the plastic bag because of wind noise) together, it was in his musto suit pocket for 20 minutes, but failed to work immediately afterward when we needed it!

OK here are the answers from the horse's mouth:

IP 4 is a salt water spray test, the unit is designed to withstand a dunking in the water – but not prolonged exposure at any depth. For example – a RIB skipper can be assured that the unit will withstand waves, the odd dropping into the bilge, falling into the water as he beach's the boat etc, but not dropping into 30 metres of water in the channel!! You would need to be in a steel sealed pressure vessel to take that! In reality / in use if the unit is put into a situation where it is lost because of the depth of water – then the mobile probably will not be retrievable anyway – if it is retrievable – the unit will have been exposed short term and should be OK.

We are trialing a IP67 rated version – which has a special treatment and we are supplying this to RNLI for test – we may offer this also as an ultra or enhanced option (especially for dingy sailors or windsurfers) – but this spec still only allows for immersion of 15cm to 1 metre – so if the dinghy sailor sinks to the bottom of the Solent – he will not be covered – but if he is bobbing up and down on the surface for 30 minutes – the phone will still work! This is the universal term for a fully waterproof unit – but take it to a 3 m deep swimming pool and it may leak – even though fully waterproof. Our claim is that our basic unit is marinised in that it is ideal for normal ON salt water use, with resistance to spray, dust, shock etc + the inadvertent drop into salt water. The unit is not suitable for Diving!

We have full test data and I agree that IP4 is slightly conservative – in reality if they send a phone back with water ingress we would replace it – unless it was obvious that it had seen undue water pressure (like the shell had been crushed).

They come with a three year warranty.

I'm sorting out a price, but it will depend on getting a minimum of 20 orders. From this thread it looks like that should be doable, but it will depend on everyone putting their money where their mouth is!

As I have got two phones now, and used one since Monday evening and our technicians got their hands on the other one yesterday and so far they are pleased with the phone, we are however looking forward to the new version due to come out in April with bluetooth capabilities.
