They were doing a deal on JCB phones and I got one for Kevin, he is tough on phones and he hasn't broken it yet (I'm going to regret saying that I'm sure!). I think I would have one for the boat and put my sim card in it so put my name down as well please John!

I'm worried Codders hasn't popped by to suggest a tesco freezer bag instead...

...and actually as these are only IPx4 he would probably have a point. so may not survive immersion e.g. if you fall overboard with it in your pocket, forget to remove it from pocket when launching and end up too deep, or even leave it lying around somewhere vulnerable on deck/in a locker that fills with water.

I was planning to wait until after the Boat Show was finished.

How does everyone feel about the "waterproofness" of these? Happy to take a punt, or do we need some more reassurance that they'll actually do the job? Bear in mind that I've had a quick look at one, but that's all.

Still happy to have one as it appeared tough and I can always revert to the freezer bag!! or a proper carrier but anything with these options has to be better than my cheap Nokia

Likewise. I am not looking for an indestructible phone, just one that will be more resilient that most.

So IPX4 is moisture resistance only.

I think I'd buy a box of sandwhich bags

Handy looking features however.

I've spoken to Simon today, and he's getting back to me with some more information about the waterproofness (is that a word?) of the phones, and what the warranty position will be if they do get wet.

The manufacturer is looking into having the 801 better waterproof, have had one since yesterday and am a bit impressed with it so far, clear good screen, good LED light as well as the Laser pointer, easy to use. Will be able to give more and better results as I have used the phone at work as from tomorrow, am at Heathrow now waiting for boarding the aircraft back home.
