Lowrance Elite 4 + Navionics Silver chart ?

Hi,

I recently put a small plotter Lowrance Elite 4 combined GPS + sonar, the inbuilt mapping is pretty useless , so I put a Navionics Silver chart on Micro SD into the unit - no improvement in the mapping at all ?.
Located River Tay in Scotland - any experience / advice on the expected quality of the silver maps greatly appreciated.

thanks

JiM

Have you selected which map you want it to display? In the chart menu you can select which charts it displays.

I just got a navionics plus for my lowrance HDS and was not impressed until I stumbled on the "Fish N' Chips" button. That is their sonar charts and gives 1' contours on the chart. I'm not sure if the silver is the same.

AFAIK the actual charts are all the same across the Navionics range, so the chart on the silver is the same as the platinum+ i.e very good. The difference is the add-ons such as 3D, pilot book, aerial photos etc. As previously said, it might be a setup issue.

Silver charts

Thanks for the reply, looks like a set-up issue as you suggest, I can't see any detail at all just now, the Navionics chart looks the same as the built in base map which is a yellow block ! - sounds like Ive not set it up to read the silver mapping, Ill have a go tonight.

What level of zoom are you viewing the chart at, if you zoom out, it just becomes a yellow block as you say, continued zooming in, reveals increasing detail.

Thanks I'll check that too - its almost as if the Navionics chart isn't being seen, but it is shown as being the chart in use on the unit settings. ?
cheers

Hit Menu, select Chart, select Chart Data, and change to Navionics.

Should do it.

Also the charts split the area into chunks, so you may also need to pick the area of Britain you are cruising in....

(But that might be down to the lack of memory on my old Lowrance plotter)

Silver Charts

Silver Charts are a cut back version of the Gold Chart. They contain no data below 10M. They're basically a cheap preloaded chart to get you to buy a plotter at a price point - avoid!

"Navionics Silver Charts are specifically designed to be preloaded in select chart plotters such as Raymarines multifunction displays to provide out-of-the-box usability with an enhanced basemap.
Silver Charts cover Europe (93S) and Rest of World (94S) regions and includes coastlines, drying lines, all navigation aids, depth information up to 10 meters (30 ft), plus other information as recommended by international standards for safe navigation with a simplified, uncluttered chart*."

You've been spending too long in a boat with Poly!

Joking aside, I suspect that is what mine defaults to if, say, I'm off Largs with "UK east" selected as the working chat area.

Did you get this issue sorted?
I had a few problems with mine not reading the chart until I found the unit only recognises SD cards no bigger than 2GB

I sent the plotter unit and card to Lowrance for checking, their suggestion,
The plotter is fine, suggested the Navionics card is faulty so sent that
For checking - will post the outcome, thanks to all.

Sorry, bit off the actual topic...

Just wanted to ask what that little unit is like as a whole?(forgetting the issue you are having at the moment)

Looking for a starter plotter/fishfinder myself but don't have crazy money to spend.

Having the same problem with mine, I did a bit of searching online. It's seems there is a software update to fix this issue.
