Mariner 30 engine service

I have just today collected my 1991 mariner 30 2 stroke from being serviced.I have only recently purchased the engine so thoght it best to get it checked over and serviced.
They have (as per there invoice)
Serviced engine
Replaced gearbox oil
2 x spark plugs
Replaced recoil rope
Replaced plastic throttle linkage
new impellor
new thermostat and gasket fitted.
Grease all linkages and run and test in tank.
The bill comes out at £190 inc vat.
I know its to late now but does that sound about right?
Pete

It doesn't sound ridiculous. I think the last price I had for that size of engine was £80 something pounds + Vat. And was only for the gearbox oil change, general grease/inspect and impellor change. I.e. not the recoil rope, throttle linkage or thermostat.

Must admit after looking at Clyde outboards web site at prices and based on what other people have said the price does seem about right.

It depends on how many hours labour and what they charge per hour. To be fair if its a main dealer using genuine parts they will charge the RRP for the parts just like all main dealers. Doing things like Thermostats and impellers does take time!.

Hi

as long as you get a "whats included" in the service list then you can make up your own mind as to if it is fair and also compare dealers.

also we call and photo anything that we feel should be looked at before doing the work and offer the used parts to the customer to take away so that they know that we have replaced what we say have.

This is now common practice for a lot of outboard service companies but whilst there a few that dont it is worth checking before you hand your engine over.

Forgot to mention that all the parts were in a bag fastened to the tiller arm along with the ends of the impeller that he found.I did ask for the pull rope to be changed as I had no idea how old it was although it looked fine.Glad I did as when he showed it me it was well worn.

You should post their name on here if you feel they have been honest. sadley there are not enough of them and there are a lot of people selling v bad engines on ebay/ online etc as they know that most people dont know how to check them.

so in the same way that we should name and shame, lets highlight the good.

Sounds a decent price to me I use Pennine Marine which is a fair trek for me but after being mugged by a dealer on my door step it's worth it
They ring you up and tell you what's up and save all the parts etc and they travel out as well if it can be done at your place.
