E-tec 115 knocking - dealers in the southwest???

Hmmmm....I went out for a run today and when I flushed the engine on muffs when I got home it sounded a little "knockey". I took the cover off and had a little poke around and found a degree of play in the main bearings......hmmm.....only 40 hours on the clock too.

Looks like another E-Tec horror may be unravelling. Any body able to reccomend a good dealer in the southwest who actually knows about these engines, most seem to be useless with them from what I have heard. I reluctant to trail it all the way back to portsmouth where I bought it as its a 500 mile round trip!

whats wrong with these engines, it seems to be the end user that gets nailed!!

God knows mate. I'm getting my boxing gloves on anticipating a fight. I have loved the engine up until now. Kind of wishing I had saved a grand or two and got an Opti or 4 stroke!

roughly 3 years ago i had a demo on a salcombe flyer 530 with a 5 hour old 115 e tec, well i never actually got to go on it as it refused to start and when it did, chucked out a load of blue smoke and sounded rougher than a 500 norton!!

then the following weekend, i met the chap again, spanking new engine on it which would have come in on the deal, temp -2 ,two stroke oil refused to mix with fuel, No start!! would only run up to 1000 rpm or something like that,
laughably he said,

its never done this before
!!
i wonder if the sales people are trained to say this in the event of any issues.

anyway , sorry going off on one....if the mains are outside their tolerance then replacement is the only option, whats the warranty on them??

They're Evinrude dealers at Lostwithiel, been good in any dealings I've had with them but that was straighforward servicing etc. Did hear a commercial user praise them for their engine work though, Worth a call perhaps.

I met the owner this summer and had a long chat on a pontoon with him. He really does have the right attitude-wouldn't hesitate to use them.

Sorry about your troubles Mark. I was about ready to buy an Etec last summer, but then went with a Yammy 4 stroke instead... in part because of a very good demo deal, but also because the dealer (who sells everything) was starting to hear stories of poor lubrication, especially when used in colder temperatures....

Don't think there's any news yet, I was at outboard services yesterday. Mark posted this on another thread.

"I popped into Outboard Services and explained my findings and observations and he told me not to run the engine again and let them examine it. Unfortunately I had to go back to work before I got it to them but it will be dropped in in mid nov for the verdict. Apparently play in the crank followed by oil dripping from the cowel are not cool in the world of Etec. Along similar lines the guy who does my mots has a 115 as well and has just had a new one just before his 3 year warranty expired after it self destructed."

Hi Gents,

No new news as yet, I'm currently stuck at work at the moment and won't be back in the uk for another 10 days or so. I popped into outboard services before I left and they didn't want to speculate too much as to what may have happened before they had examined the engine which is fair enough.
I will give them a call in the next couple of days and get it booked in ASAP when I am home

The chap who has had a new E-tec had his motor rebuilt under warranty. (I think it had a broken conrod). He picked up the engine and when he started it he said it sounded terrible. He spoke to the dealer again who said to run it and see if it improved and the first time out it failed again big time. As far as I know it was nearly 6 months between him having the 1st problems and getting a new motor which he had to pay £1500 towards as by that time the motor was out of warranty and BRP wanted £500 per year for the use he had had out of it.

Just to clarify this was not Outboard Services!!

Cornish Outboard Servicing

If you are using Outboard Services I hope you are a high earner! Have a reputation for being v.expensive. I am based in Fowey and we need someone good here, I now take mine down to Robin Curnow in Falmouth.

ha ha

I guess thats the problem ,that the e tecs arent burning any or enough fossil oil and blowing up, all they have to do is mix the right amount of oil with the fuel and away you go> Simples!!
