Thrust vs HP

Does anyone know what thrust a 3hp gas motor would give. I want to buy a electric motor for my Avon redstart.

I guess it depends on what pitch prop is fitted - in the same way that the towing pull of a vehicle depends on the gearing. A relatively low powered 4x4 in low range would generate a higher drawbar pull (thrust) than a Ferrari with maybe 5x the power, and likewise a fine pitched prop (like the "Saildrive" aux motors some companies make) should generate a higher thrust than one fitted with a conventional prop designed to push a smaller boat at a higher speed.

Probably not the answer you wanted though

You will not find an equivalent speed unless you go with a "torquedo". I was quite happy with my 30-40 lb thrust Minnkota on my 10 footer. search youtube for minnkota and zodiac or inflatable.

VERY very roughly 110lbs of thrust = 1 hp. But its really an apples and oranges kind of comparion.

The very largest 24V trolling motors may get close to the HP of a 3hp gas engine.

I guess this is for actual trolling rather than getting from A to B?

Just 'coz what they usually omit to mention in the "how light our electric motor is compared to an outboard" waffle is the weight of the battery......

But back to the original Q, Wot Bog said +1.
