Buying a laptop for my sons going away pressie/birthday He'll be using it for presentations/ internet surfing/ downloading music etc. Any strong recommends, do's, dont's etc?

We've just bought a couple of Inspiron 1300 Laptops from Dell, have to say we are both very pleased with them. Plus they are a very good brand and exceptionally good value for money and next day delivery.

Trust me; he/you will never regret the purchase. Rock-solid OS, no viruses, great bundled software (iLife 06), super case design, built in iSight cam, etc etc.

try and see what www.europc.co.uk can do for you. they get all Dells returned units and sell them as refurb. but they are "as new"

see what they can save you.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 great laptop. it has some nice cool media buttons on the front good for gaming and music.The speakers are great it even has a sub underneath (very a small one though) improves sound significantly. I might recommend the xps for gaming though. Nice widescreen also great for DVD's and gaming. For internet surfing it has a built in wireless card.

dell are great unless you have to put in a tech support query to get a warranty problem resolved... ...indian tech support / call centres where you get asked the same questions over and over and over again. The staff know nothing and it takes weeks of stupid emails and phonecalls (like:
ME: I have a problem with my laptop screen which is completely unreadable (have tried various things to fix - but believe it is a fault with the screen)
THEM: what does the error message say
ME: There is no error message for me to read - the screen is completely unreadable
THEM: if you go to Start, Control Panel, Display - what is setting xyz set to
ME: I can't go to anything I am unable to view windows as the screen is unreadable.
THEM: Hold down F2 when the system boot, what does "xyz" say?
ME: I can't read the screen - it is broken!
THEM: Your screen is not covered for physical damage
ME: Its not physically damaged it just doesn't display anything readable
THEM: What does it say on the screen

etc etc etc - this went on for 3 weeks until they sent out an engineer (grudgingly) who looked at it and in less than 1 minute diagnosed that the screen was faulty and replaced it.

I got a damn cheap toshiba from www.ebuyer.com and it's done me pretty well. Needed a ram boost though - most laptops tend to ship with a paltry amount of ram.
