Yes - empathy enough to know the car was clocked and no way had it done 50,000 miles.

The place was called Empress car sales - big car supermarket near Newport. I was desperate for a car at the time and against my better judgement I decided to by the motorised sofa - 2.9l V6 kind.

I paid a deposit subject to test drive. They prepped the car but hadn't even fixed the speedo. A mechanic came with me and after just a mile or 2 I noticed the oil light coming on at idle. The autobox would jump into neutral every time I did an emergency stop.

After about 10 mins the engine started to die and in fairness to the mechanic he said it would be hard to get my money back unless it died properly - another few miles and it did - pulled up outside their showroom with steam pouring from under the bonnet - oil everywhere. they couldn't get me out of there fast enough!!!

Yes. The Ford v6 oil pump was driven from a hexagonal shaft from the bottom of the Dizzy. The edges used to round off on the shaft causing it to slip and reduce the action of the oil pump causing engine failure.

Why didn't you allow for this before you set out?

Unless you were planning to come by boat - then the north cost is only 20 minutes from the south coast by road (only 10 minutes in some places) so it don't really make much difference. The main drag into Cornwall (the A30) is pretty central to the county really.

I actually live on the north coast - but tow my boat 20 miles to the south coast for easy launching - the boat launching facilities on the north cost are crap. Its a shame really as there is some spectacular coastline there.

Well, if you ask them really nicely, I'm quite sure they'll all come over to the North coast for you.

I suspect the guys in the garage saw you coming and thought, nudge nudge weve got a right one ere, this pilchard is the sort of nobbur who will buy anything, lets give it a go..........Little did they know what they were up against eh!! a walking encyclopedia that knows everything and cars being a well proven speciality......were they impressed with your gear changes, matching the revs just perfectly?
