here's a personal observation:
Navigators get injured at times and peeps willing to train who have the right ability & temperament
may just be very welcome indeed.
Or you could offer to pay your way on, say, a trial run as lots of them seem to fair guzzle the fuel

Another job that comes up frequently for non-racers is safety-boat stuff. A few Forumites do that as well and get to know the race teams also.
We hope to go across to see Cowes Classic and you are very welcome to park yourself on Zebedee (top speed 35k
so no race boat!!!!!!)
Who knows ; a race team may spot your interest and pm you
(Don't give up. The Missus has even wangled a few spins on Race Boats
