Good post, this was the 2007 Ribnet trip filmed mainly going to Alderney.

We anchor a 5 tonne yacht with a 10kg Delta in Braye harbour and sleep soundly on board. Indeed we find anchoring more comfortable because the mooring buoys tend to get a back wash off the harbour wall that sets up a an uncomfortable motion.

We choose the area in the red circle normally because the big yachts can't get that close into the beach and its quite sheltered. There is a steep ridge that rising from 11m to 7m so the anchor goes onto the 7m bank.

Don't forget the dinghy to get ashore unless your doing a Bond 007 with the drysuit and tux underneath

I think I may have just chanced upon this years entertainment, to be provided by gotchiguy, but perhaps with a 250 HO rather than a 300

No need for me to do it, here's a video using the 3.3L block. No battery connected.

I'd need a longer boat. It'd take one hell of a run up I reckon

Not only a longer boat but a bigger rock where you can take more than a couple of steps in either direction

Looks scary to me. Glad you all made it OK in the end though.
How come you ran out of fuel?

lol That is a long story!

AFAIR it came down to sheer endurance in terms of hours of motoring, with wind and tide working against them the engine just plain drank their tank dry.

Rob may admit, when they had not hit the half way mark after their planned total trip time - they could have looked at things differently?

Heavy weather boating uses a lot more fuel than flat cruising!

How long would the crossing "normally" take?

Mrs A and I did Poole - Braye in a shade over two hours last Easter .... but that was in very good conditions (and Mrs A likes playing 'dare' with the tankers!)

The picture of us at the top of the page was taken in even flatter conditions on Alderney - Le Havre the following day.

I normally allow two and a half to three hours for Poole - Braye in reasonable conditions.

Brainz, We try and meet @ 11am (allow a bit for faffing) to make sure we get a cold beer in Alderney sailing club before 2pm . We did have a little bit of fog on the outward leg in 2009 and return leg in 2010 but we've been very fortunate with conditions.

After a long absence from RIBnet cruises, Magellan Echo (formelly Magellan Alpha) will coincide our Alderney trip with yours (if thats OK !!)

We’ll be running from Ramsgate down to Alderney so might not make the 2pm beer appointment, but look forward to sharing a few with like minded ribbers over the weekend of 20-21-22 July.

Happy to adjust our plans to meet up & cruise with other SE ribbers ??
