control box wanted

hi all
im after a control box, do like the look of the quicksilver 2000 type. its for my 20hp mariner/yamaha outboard dates around 1986. dont mind if it has electrics loom, but i am just after the use for cables for throttle and gear shift. if it had the cables aswell would be a bonus. 12 feet im after. but control box would be cool.
please get intouch Matt, i live in Devon

I've got a Teleflex recessed type single lever control box here, with Merc cable fitment, a bit like this:

....and if I look hard enough, I should be able to find a pair of unused Merc 12' cables.

Hi i don't know to much about this one you have,it looks quite small, does it have a warm up lever ? like on the quicksilver ones ? also if you did find some cables 12 feet approximation, slightly longer rather than shorter. someone pm me last night to say they might have a quicksilver one knocking around, if you don't mind could you wait till i hear back from them today, its just to be , how much would you want for the lever plus cables if found ? thank you for getting intouch Matt

It's got a neutral lock, where you lift the lever upwards to disengage the lock and also a warm up function, where you slide the lever away from the console to open the throttle without engaging forward gear.

I was thinking of £40 for the box and £10 each for the cables.

I'll take a photo of the actual unit if you like, as it is slightly different to the one in the photo I posted earlier.

hi again thanks for getting back to me sounds like a good set up, thing is i have just heard back from a guy who i originally first asked and he also has a Yamaha control box, but no cables and waiting to hear back weather it is a pull to open control box which is what i need. Do you know if the control box you have is Pull to open, i think what it means is would the cable be pulled towards the front of the boat to open the throttle, also would the cables work with my outboard. I am sorry about all the question, but i do need it to be right and i have little knowledge of this side of things, thank you very much for your help wait to hear back from you . Matt

Yamaha outboards use 33c cables. Mercury motors use a Merc specific cable.

So, to use Matt's Mercury box with a Yam based Mariner, you have 2 options:

1. Use 'hybrid' cables with a Merc control box end and a 33c fitting at the outboard end. These are commercially available and known as Mariner or 'Yamahariner' cables.

2. Use an adaptor kit (around £20) to convert 33c cables to fit the Merc control box.

Or you could use a 33c type control box, eg Yamaha, Soozook, Tohatsu, Honda, or an after-market control box, eg Teleflex suited to 33c cables.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, I had overlooked the fact that your motor is a Yam-based Mariner, in which case, my Merc cables are no good to you.

I do have a set of 33c adaptors here which would allow my Teleflex box to be used with 33c cables, although I don't think I have any 33c cables in 12 foot length.

re control box

hi d
thanks for that info, i have so many options at the mo, its now got to the point i dont know which to go for, i have been offerd a yamaha 701 right hand box which was what come originally with the outboard i brought, but the cables were siezed and it was a left hand side box, no good for me my steering wheels on the right. ( so this seems to be the one i should go for )

also been offered the one you have and also a couple of quicksilver 2000 ones, square looking lever type( the one i did like the look off )

Then matts one which does look very nice, i was tempted to go for this one has when i read about it it said its for murcury/Mariner, and with my outboard being a mariner ( on the stamp ) but yes Yamaha based, i was thinking this is the one i want, but from what you say about the cables and not knowing if its a pull to open im not sure. but i do like the style of it and if i can get cables easly im still tempted, oh and not to far away from me.

what do you reckon

As standard, the Merc boxes are pull to open. Not sure whether this particular type can be re-configured as 'push to open', but most can.
