RYA training, N Wales, recommendations?

Hi,

I'm just getting into Ribbing and want to have some training before I look at buying. I am looking for an RYA Powerboat Certificate 1&2 Course in North Wales or the Wirral.

Has anyone got any experience with any of the training organisations and any recommendations?

Thanks

Bert

Did my l2 with a guy called Jono in Pwllheli. Can't remember the school's name but he owns it. Great guy and very good selection of different ribs so you get to use a little shallow v one and a big deep v one so you can feel the difference for yourself. Small school so he basically has a day or two and he will tailor it as the class wants - nav, rescue, local knowledge etc.

Otherwise Plas Menai is of course quite good - much bigger centre though so it will be less tailored. Not sure if it might veer towards sailing a bit? Can't say as haven't done a powerboat course there.

Hi there

Ive just done a level 2 with a guy from North Wales and would really recommend him. He has just set up a company called Waterwise Marine Training but prior to that was teaching for a few different schools.

I dont think his website is up and running yet, but his no is 07877 980243 - David Williams is his name. He was really helpful and full of lots of useful background information.

cheers
Joe

Plas Menai - North Wales

We trained at this centre which is excellent and reasonably priced. You can stay there of you want too. They have a selection of boats that you use from small and slow to big and fast, so it gives you experience in lots of different boats rather than just one - a distinct advantage.

+1 for Jono.
Did mine there and was more than happy.
Plenty of cheap B and B's to stop at also.
Got mine for half what everyone else had paid by booking and paying well in advance.

Thanks for all the useful replies, obviously a very active forum!

I imagine if/when I can afford a RIB it will be the wrong side of 6m, so I'd quite like to experience and training on something that size rather than a bigger beast.

The Wallasey one seems like a good option for distance - not least because I have family within 200m of Victoria Road. But happy to travel and make a weekend of it if necessary.

Any more advice?

You are prob only 15 miles from us (knockin) most sundays,7a.m.ish,normally rustle a crew up on the White Lion car park and head for phwellei for the day,p.m. us your mobile and will let you know when there is some spare seats available,we normally dive for scallops, bit of fishing, razz in the ringoes and finish off with a barby, end up back at the White Lion,Llyncls some 12 hours later, chip in towards the juice you and a mate can come and have a taster till you get your own tubes.

Only just seen this request thread. I strongly recommend Dave Williams (Waterwise Marine Training, tel 07877 980 243.) He instructed me and my colleagues some time ago, very helpful. I've recently spoke to him about a VHF course. Top bloke.
