Retube 2024

Hi my 2004 yellow hypalon tubes on my 6.5m solent are causing me cosmetic grief due to black spots of ? mould ?mildew.

Am considering

1) attacking with powerful chemicals (any suggestions?)
2) painting with specialist paint (which?)

The third option, a retube at £8000 ish does not appeal!

Can you stick a second layer of hypalon (or modern equivalent) on the top half of the tubes where to he mould is?

Boat is simply not worth spending £8k on her tubes...the tubes are absolutely fine apart from the black spots....

You could always give it a wash down with a detergent and soft brush to get the worst off then just put up with them.

They are not doing any real harm, and won't spread if you clean the boat down occasionally.

I'd try to remove the mildew with "Shmuffex". It takes a few applications, but seems to be the only thing that works - beyond a retube.

I second that it works wonders.

I’d third the use of Schmuffex. My 2011 tubes were covered in black mould spots and a couple of treatments got rid of it completely. Don’t be afraid to leave it on for a while before hosing off.

Schmuffex - £24

Domestos - £1.25

Reading over those SDS, I'd assume that the products are almost identical, if in fact, they aren't actually the same thing, adjusted by £23 to suit the rigours of the marine sales environment

I'm not saying they don't work, I just know which one I would try first.

Not sure about the affects on hypalon or pvc but plain old bleach removes mold from silicon very well. Just soak tissues in it and place against the area for a few hours, then wipe the mold away.

Shmuffex gets a big thumbs up. Done one application, huge improvement. Will do another as weather improves. Thank you for input
