Redbay's 40th Anniversary

As many of you know Tom and Redbay Boats are celebrating their 40th Anniversary this year – congratulation to everyone associated with this very ambitious and successful company.

FI Tom started out in very humble premises

40 years later through sheer grit, determination and vision he and the rest of his team have built up a world class design and manufacturing facility in Cushdenhall on the north east coast of Northern Ireland

To mark this milestone in the company's history - Redbay plans to host a number of events this year and two have just been announced:

Saturday afternoon February 25th - Workshop tours, official opening of its new mega-shed etc (hopefully a blast in the new Corryveckan 1250)

Saturday May 27th - 40 Redbay Ribs to Ardbeg for lunch - all Redbay Ribs on the mainland and islands will be especially welcome - what about it Mick

It is Matthew it happens every year but this year Tom wants 40 redbays to celebrate the fortieth anniversary. If you have a redbay and can manage it will be a great day.

I've been away and missed this news! Certainly good craic all round. Tom's footman has just delivered my gilt edged invite so I'll dust off my passport and give donegaldan a shake...

Thank you

Saturday was a very special day for all of us who are proud to be part of Team Redbay

Tom, with his family and staff, pulled out all the stops to treat all their customers friends, suppliers and well wishers, from all parts of the UK and Ireland, to a very "emotional" day and evening to remember. Conor also treated us to a very impressive "blast" in the new 1250 Corryvreckan

Everyone who spoke - talked about the very special relationship between Redbay Boats and its customers friends and Ribochet was very proud to be there and to share in this occasion as part of this "family".

“It was never meant to grow this big” repeated Tom but that’s what happens when you create and develop a world class product and customer service ethos second to none.

Next on the horizon is the trip to Ardbeg at the end of May and the goal is to have 40 Redbay’s and once again non “Irish” Redbay owners will be more than especially welcomed,

What a great day that was! I've been kicking about the yard for almost a decade now and I've always been impressed by the incredible blend of approachability, professionalism, ambition and ingenuity that the entire team exudes - very much the "can-do" operation. Saturday was a chance to see the entire 40 year story at a glance and there was a great turnout cut the ribbon on Workshop No.4, join in the celebrations, contemplate the past 40 years and consider what might follow - because there was a very strong sense that we were reviewing the FIRST 40 years.

There were a lot of boats out on show - from the original wooden clinker fishing boat Redbay 1, through the Fishwishers Fastfishers and the Sports Boats to the first small RIBs and beyond. That's a brand new Fastfisher if anyone is looking for a classic

Everyone was there (except donegaldan, but he had an Excuse). I even spotted Paul Lemmer the RIB journalist and his trusty photographer hard at work. A good night's craic was had at the boat club where Redbay had laid on a magnificent dinner. Turns out it wasn't just a 40th - someone was celebrating his birthday too!

At breakfast the next morning there were a couple of UK boat industry types discussing the company and the incredible journey it had taken. My ears were flapping - "Who were Redbay taking the business from?" they wondered. After a long pause for thinking their conclusion was "Has to be Delta..."

For Redbay nerds, the attached photo shows the differences between the old 11/12 meter boats and the new 1250. On the far back right is (I think) a 12m, itself a stretch version of the 11m. On the near left is hull 1250-03 Lady Kate, the difference in bulk is vast. The topsides moulding in the centre is about to be bonded top the 1250 hull on the near right. That's a single section moulding from multiple moulds and inserts, so the finish is stunningly good. You can see why they wanted a pair of 10 ton hoists. The large white moulding on the back left is a two deck cabin from some mad skunkworks project that Tom is up to.

The other pic is one I missed earlier - the Redbay bar. It's a bar made out of a boat. Or maybe a boat made out of a bar. Either way - it needs more draught...
