Same here, in the past it's seemed a bit of overkill for pottering down to Maenporth beach for a spot of swimming and sunbathing.
However I do fancy one mainly to keep the rain/spray off my glasses which can effectively half-blind me.

Voted "Too expensive" but want to vote "don't really see the need" as well.

For the amount of use it would get I think that it would be poor value for me. Can normally make do with good sunglasses or ski goggles - which i already have.

It's what we use in France - the retractable visor version. It sits much much closer to your head than the Gecko. Is not quite as warm as the Gecko but still nice and cozy. I find it slightly uncomfortable on my ears wearing my glasses underneath it all day. It's taken some bashing, but I'm not convinced it's quite as "heavy duty" as the Gecko. I would NOT recommend the "Gath Hat" or the "Gecko Surf Lid".. there is NO protection of the forehead AT ALL.

The new Gedi looks quite cool. That's what the RWC boys & girls are using out with K38 now... damn site cheaper than Gecko too.

heres a bit of a contradiction. i have the Gecko helmets. However it took a big decision to buy them for the following reasons.

a) they are expensive.

b) They take a bit of getting used to looking at. ie they look funny.

c) You don't see many people wearing them.

Having said all that if your going to be on a RIB and use the boat for what it was designed to do then really you should have some sort of head protection. And if your going to have it then the only option is the Gecko, they have no alternative.

It don't think that it has been CE marked yet.. so if you're planning on using it other than for pleasure purposes, you may be on a sticky wicket. The only downside for me, is that there doesn't seem to be anyway to integrate a VHF headseat into any of the Gaths - they're simply too close fitting.

geckos look great but could not justify the price so i purchased some alternative items from browguard which seem great for the price. ideal in the cold in winter as they have built in screens etc

I have the earlier Gecko with the foam pads.I actually prefer this as it does let your head breath.I think their great but would consider in the future another make.Is their any clause in ones insurance on weather helmets need the CE mark even for pleasure use.I know it refers to water toys.

mmm... except that as far as I can determine (including discussions with my insurer) there is no such thing as a CE mark for inflatable toys.
