pacific 22 Deck

I have an ex MOD pacific 22 and am thinking of replacing the ply deck and installing a hatch forward and aft as well as raising the stern by about four inches. Does any body know what grade ply would be suitable to sheet the deck with and fibreglass over, or alternatively what grade ply to use to sheet the deck without fibreglassing over and what coating to seal it with afterwards. Could anybody suggest what type of hatches to use that are good but also affordable. Any help appreciated....

I replaced all my decks with 1/2 inch marine ply, also treated top and bottom with a Burgess type wood sealer, then over treated the top with epoxy undercoat, ready for the aircraft flightdeck non slip paint.

If you have the hull/build number it is likely we have the deck plan for it, including the original scope of supply.

It's an International product, 2 part epoxy. It appears on Ebay every now and then as surplus.

I was advised against using it if there was ever any possibility you'd want to remove it as once it's there, it's not coming off apart from chips etc.

I bought from a company in Plymouth called Knights surplass, they sell anything ex goverment i paid £20 for 5ltrs more than enough had to through some away as it was mixed and went off.

Here are a few photos, we have reconditioned quite alot P22's in the past. As I remember the construction was 1/2" and 3/8" marine ply. I think most of the panels may have been 3/8" but probably better to use 1/2" on it all.

Its easy to do, getting the old screws out of the sheets below the panels is the hardest job. They are brass and turn to cheese.

For the hardest ones we put a small hole saw over and cut the surrounding ply out . Sometimes we did this on lots of them.

Dont use cheaper WBP ply, only use marine ply. The WBP ply on the market these days will not last. I used it once and i regretted it shortly after.

Do prime all the panels on each side before screwing it down.

The smaller panels that go on to the deck beams should be fitted with a polysulphide sealant, this will always stay slightly tacky. This was mod standard.

The larger panels that go on top are fitted with foam tape so that they may be removed again. Around the outside few mm a small bead of sikaflex or other polyurethane mastic is applied.

The larger panels are fitted with countersunk screws in to half cup washers (this you will see on your boat at present) the panels below are fitted with countersunk screws in to the ply.

I enclose a few photos, sorry they are not that great but it should show you some of it.

We stopped doing P22's some time ago, but I am doing a P38 at present, ill try and get some photos up of that soon.

was a long time ago in a previous life. The deck was 9mm external ply but well coated with deck paint, although the aircraft stuff sounds good for the price. 9mm ply worked because the deck was supported around the endges and with 2 supports across the middle so didn't bend. If you replace the stern piece then I would go for 12mm or ali checker sheet instead.
