How to repair remove serious staining to hypalon tubes on new rib

The boat was put in the marina shed over winter without its cover and it appears someone was cutting hot steel in close proximity and the hot dust particles have fallen on the hypalon tubes.

As a result the tubes are significantly stained and the stains are not coming out with cleaning .

What can I do?

If you have a puncture repair kit fot the boat, or even just some old hypalon you could try some oxalic acid, I've never used it directly on hypalon but on gel coat it does a wonderful job of getting rid of rust stains.

Good luck with it, BUT DO TEST A SCRAP BIT FIRST.

You probably need to use more aggressive cleaning, that’s still not a guarantee it will remove it as rust stains are notoriously difficult.

Read this, lots of suggestions including oxalic acid in powder form to make up your own paste and used with a Scotchbrite pad. Goes without saying, try on an inconspicuous area first. You can also use general hypalon cleaners such as rib revive (available from Rib Shop). Once you’ve cleaned it, use a 3M tube protectant, and get the cover on.

Wow, that looks bad

Apart from going down the legal route for a retube, I can only suggest that you try several applications of Shmuffex. Although it is primarily a mould remover, we have had some success on rust marks. Some of the pics seem to show streaks where rusty water has run down the tube (These should be removable). The problem is if hot metal particles have landed on the tube and melted their way into the fabric, you might find that even if you clean them, they come back later.

I hope you get a resolution.

Regards

Steve

What can I do?
Try a test area of barkeepers friend powder, rubbed on the tube, active ingredient (oxalic acid) my go to product to remove rust stains

Sent from my motorola edge 20 lite using RIB Net mobile app

Dragon's Breath is PH neutral and dissolves iron fallout from car wheels and paintwork. Worth a shot.

My first thought would be ask the marina what they intend to do surely they have insurance for this kind of thing. Most marinas don't allow grinding in general areas purely because of this, it happens with cars as well. Id definitely be having stern words with them before I cleaned it up.

I've used oxcalic acid on hypalon tubes before & it's worked fine without harm & takes rust stains off gelcoat so I'd expect it to help here.

I had rust stains on a Sevylor inflatable kayak (rust stains not bits of rusty metal) I used "HG Stainaway 7 rust" mixed with some bicarb soda so it became a paste, lightly scrubbed the mixture into the rust stains, left it for an hour and washed it off. It took two goes but it did disappear.
