Hello fellow boaters. Aerotec engine advice please

I have a Bombard Aerotec and currently have a Tohatsu 20 ph 53kg.
I am thinking of going for the lighter Mercury 20 efi , anyone have this set up?
Welcome your replies.

Hi Nick and welcome to the forum.

Good to have another Aerotec user on board. We've had ours 5yrs after many previous SIBs and it's the one that suits our use perfectly.

Thanks David.
I’ve had a few sibs and this is my favourite. So quick and easy to set up. 5mins with my bravo pump. Also very stable. Just hoping the Mercury 20efi is a good match. What engine have you got?
Nick

Ha ha I've had an engine "journey".

First a 15hp 2-stroke Mercury which I had before the Aerotech... perfect for 2 or 2 plus teen.

Then we looked to be 2 plus 2 teens so bought a new Suzuki DF20A to pull the performance back.

Then second teen decided not to come out so we were often 2 plus teen or just 2... and I was finding the DF20A hard to handle.

So downshifted to a new Mariner 9.9 which was a better weight/bulk to move and just acceptable on performance.

But I missed that extra grunt of the 15/20hp motors so went for a really nice condition Yamaha 15 2-stroke which is where we are now.

Yes the 15hp 2 strokes are a good match. I’ve got a 20 Tohatsu 53 kg a little bit to heavy so going for the new lighter Mercury 20 efi. A good thing about the Aerotec is the folding launching wheels are very sturdy

Your engine journey could be described as full Circle

Hi Nick

I have an Aerotec and a Tohatsu mfs20e 43kg which is the same engine as the merc.
I have found it to be a great match for the aerotec. I have had a 15 and 25hp on there previously.
The 25 was amazing but 53kg and very thirsty.
The 15 is great one or two up and the 20 is where you'd expect it bang in the middle for performance.
The good thing about the newer 20 is its very good on fuel, no smell and my experience of it is that it doesn't suffer from the dreaded transom splash.

The only downside from the previous 2t outboards is that if you run the engine on remotes you cannot quickly convert back to tiller as I could with the 25 is that matters to you.

That’s very good to know Steve as you say the merc and Tohatsu use the same block. It’s always tricky matching engines. The Mercury 20e is 45kg. I don’t think a couple of kilos would make much difference, it’s still a lot lighter than my 20c Tohatsu. Will only use on a manual tiller. Thanks for your info much appreciated hoping to pick it up this weekend.

Just be aware the Merc/Mariner 20’s in short shaft, manual start are plated at 47.5kg despite all the advertisement blurb stating 45kg. They get round this by making a manual start remotes model (MRC) without tiller. WTF. Lightest model cop out etc. etc.

In the real world these new Merc/Mariners are substantially lardier than the Tohatsu and Suzuki motors.

Well!... I’m swaying back towards the lighter Tohatsu if the Merc and marinas are plated up 47.5kg. I would think this is probably the wet weight oiled up.
I wonder what the Tohatsu weighs wet I know the dry weight is 43kg
