When is brand new not brand new?

I have just noticed that my new F-rib is 4 years old. It was bought from a dealrship for full price as a brand new boat. It clearly has never been used. What are my options? I bought it in good faith as new boat almost straight off the production line. TIA, Eddie

Tricky one that. If you didn’t know how old it was, it wouldn’t be a problem. For all intents & purposes it’s “new” in such that it hasn’t been used & you are the first owner.
Is it still the current model, have there been any changes since it was manufactured to the current model? I could only see a problem if the boat had a limited life expectancy due to glue/fabric etc.
If it was me, I’d contact the seller & explain your dissatisfaction & ask what they are prepared to do to make you happy.

Thanks Dave. I only found out it's age when they emailed the the Certificate of Conformity. 09/06/16. I was just wondering if this had happened to anyone before. I will speak to them tomorrow.

Dave, said it all really. Very odd that an importer or retailer should be holding such old stock. I know the small boat industry guys don’t work on ‘JIT’ manufacturing but selling a 2016 boat in 2019/2020 is a bit extreme.

Is there a normal UK lifespan of a PVC boat?

>>>Is there a normal UK lifespan of a PVC boat?

It's the glue that usually fails first. To give an example with Zodiac/Bombard there were a few forum members going back a couple of years who suffered the common failure of glue bond between tube and transom on their Aerotecs… these boats were mostly around 15yrs old.

So in the case of those if sold one 4yrs old as new then you'd lost 27% of the failure free life.

The Aerotec I bought "new" in 2015 was a 2014 showroom display model (knew that when buying) and reduced by 20% plus for that reason.

I'd be trying for a similar claim to the Frib dealer.

Are you certain that is the date of manufacture? From the way you word it, it could be the date that the COC was registered. That would be before the first boat of that type/model was certificated.

Is that a certificate of conformity for your boat with seial number ?,or is it a certificate for the range of boats when it was first inspected and certified as conforming ? ...just a thought

Sounds like the certificate of conformity was first issued for that model in 2016. Check the hull no on the boat last two digits are year of manufacture

The certificate of conformity is for the model of the boat sometimes even a range of lengths but the last two digits of the hull no are the important nos giving the year of manufacture

My future mk ll was 5 years old. Paper work said it was shipped from Zodiac when 2 years old at a discount to dealer. They used it as the floor model. Kept inside for the 3 years on display. Except for the marks of an outboard being mounted the boat was unmarked. I was told all this upfront. The cost to me was 40% off regular sales price.
The worst part of your deal might be the lack of disclosure.

How do you know the tube's fabric is PVC , bought it as such. FRibs sell Hypalon fabrics as well.

Happy Boating
