Names

Hi everyone

I'm just starting out and have got myself a honwave SIB and an outboard, I'm going to be going on the river Medway down as far as Rochester, I've looked into what I need and the only thing I'm stuck on as it doesn't say anywhere on the environment gov site, but Do I need to name my boat or not???
Hope someone can help me
Many thanks
Brian

It's not a requirement as such but I always name my SIB as it's so much easier to have one to put on the insurance form, any river licence etc... or for example our recent holiday with an honesty box for the slip/pontoon... so they know "XXXXX" has paid if they're doing a quick visual check.

I have the name on the transom so if it was lost on the water at least it narrows things down for the authorities and others if they can look for the name and not just a "grey inflatable".

For paperwork, "dinghy" will usually do. A name is nice to have, though. My three (so far) were/are Tompot (a type of fish), Vital Spark (named after Para Handy's vessel) and Mousetrap (because Vital Spark was eaten by a mouse).

I keep the same name as I change SIBs... just makes it easier. I had a GRP trailed boat years ago that came with its name of Nimrod so made my SIBs as if its tender... Nimrod II.

Of course you need to be careful and appropriate with names... I associate mine with "Mighty Hunter" as in the Nimrod aircraft... but in a thread a while back on the dangers of naming an esteemed Mod was quick to point out the USA meaning to be an "inadequate person".

If I find myself in the USA with the SIB I'll be well lost so sticking with it!
