Prop problems

Thanks for your input, Dirk. You often give useful advice, albeit in your "own style" but you're wide of the mark today.

Steel Developments are useful and helpful, but do a search on them here and it's surprising how many problems people have encountered - eg: vibrating propellor and wrong prop supplied.

I may get some feedback from them as "Mr Charter Co" is intending to read them the riot act. I hardly think they will be saying "Oh yes we cocked up big-time twice in a row aren't we stupid".

Don't know what you mean about cheap prop to use in a "high perf" installation - I was about to buy a new prop identical to the s/h one I bought, and chose it on the basis of recommendation and the claims from Steel Developments that the Solas Titan is a much better unit than the Yamaha prop.

Pilot error? Always possible for any of us, apart from you of course, Dirk. You seem to have pushed a few buttons with my buddies here, but I share your respect of the excellent RYA courses available. And I know that from attending those courses and learning.

Exactly.

Symptoms being: Loss of drive at anything above moderate throttle opening, achieving about 12kts or roughly 2200rpm, reducing later as the symptoms worsened.

Sorry to see you had a problem understanding my reference to cheap prop, but what I meant was that if you buy a £200.00 prop
(current retail price of a 3 blade titan) you must expect it to have it's limitations, although as you point out it had been re-bushed incorrectly. I dare say the new one you were going to buy wouldn't have been "identical".

As for me never suffering from pilot error, your wrong there. I've f***ed up loads of times, but I've never mistaken cheap for quality.

And pushing buttons, that's me job on here, although you all make it very easy!

Dirk, be useful and tell us where they are on sale for £200.00 - more like £300 from what I've seen. And this prop was recommended to me by Steel Developments, in full knowledge of my engine spec and RIB type. They assured me that the Solas Titan is a top quality prop, superior to the Yamaha OEM item. You ought to work in a shoe shop as a Saturday job, selling shoes "for indoor use only".

As it happens whilst I sometimes object to Dirk's personal attacks on people, I appreciate his wit, but more than that I realise that the guys knows what he is talking about,

As does that Ginger nobber that runs boat mad.! They both know quite a lot about transferring power fron the engine to the props

So his opinion although somewhat blunt, and usually provocative, is generally based in reality. Ignore the bit about Driver error Richard B cos that gives him the result he was fishing for, concentrate on his technical argument.

So I guess that makes me a member of the unnoficial fan club, I somehow feel I just lost a few buddies on Ribnet

I don't think I said they were crap, just not as good quality as a more expensive prop.

the reason I bought one was because I was asked to buy a customer who wanted a spare "get him home" prop, something that "dickie" should consider!
