Mercury 4HP Gearbox problem

Mercury 5 HP OB 4stroke 2001
I have just replaced the water impeller and during the process menaged to lift the gearselector into the drive position - it is now too high out of the gearbox, I have tried to carefully return it to neutral or reverse no avail.
Can you advise what I should do to rectify this.

Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum. The gear change rod can feel resistant to operate without the benefit of the lever you normally use to select gear. It needs a really firm push/pull. Also have you tried rotating the prop a little as you move the rod?

You have pulled the shift shaft out to high. Take the gearbox off. Remove the 10mm bolt at front of box with the stainless plate to get that out that white plastic bush. Hold the gearbox so the propshaft is vertical with the prop nut at the bottom. You will now be able to get the shifter back in its correct position if you hold the shift shaft beside the driveshaft and push the shift shaft back into the box. 2 minute job after you have box off.

Just a thought- is the white plastic bush a push fit or is it threaded? Thanks

Never in doubt, even with resting 2 players for 10 mins each. The plastic bush just pulls out.

Mercury 4HP gearbox

Hi Davie
Great afternoon in the garage and all now fixed and working well.

Thank you so much for your advice- it worked perfectly.

Good luck in the 6 Nations ( still hope that England wins though)
