.........did I once go on a web site that enabled you to put in your engine serial number and in return it gave you informaation on the importer, date of manufacture etc..... any ideas ?

I see you have a Yam so can't help you here but if you were to have a Mercury/Mariner then you could log on to www.marinepower.com click on Check Registration and put in your engine serial number to check whether your engine had been registered by the dealer and whether it is still under warranty
