Can this engine be saved

Well look what was found at the bottom of the river Deben. A nice little 2 stroke 2 hp a little worse than it had been.

We think it has been in the mud at the bottom of the river for 3 - 4 years. There was still clean petrol in the tank.

It is being stripped down at the moment to see if it will run again. Fingers crossed. Nice little project. Imagine the joy if it fires up

This is the main Bearing from the Engine. It has a notch and a wire spring. Cant seem to buy one of these but Cant also see what the spring is doing. Anyone know what the srring wire is for ?

If you remove the spring, does the bearings/cage assembly come out easily?

Thats what I thought but no the bearings are firm in place when the spring is removed. In the rebuild it will have a standard bearing as we cant seem to buy one like this or work out what it is for

Bizarre. I can't see how a standard bearing would be an issue.

I haven't seen that before but on the motorcycle cranks I've reconditioned there was an anti-rotation peg on the bearings. Another possibility is it might help the bearing retain lubrication

Not too bad.

This is more of a challenge than trying to get a good solid engine at the end of it. Not going to spend too much money to make it like Triggers Broom but just want to see if it will fire up and run

Maybe a bit of a polish with 3M brand 400 grit and a bit of WD40, with a bootlace wrapped round will clean it up a little. And certainly a new set of bearings.

Oh, and once you’ve finished with it, if you break it, I am on the lookout for a very last version gearcase. Can’t quite tell which version it is from the pic though.

I've seen bearings similar to that before, I used a standard bearing without the notch but assembled the bearing into the crankcase with loctite

Yes I have seen something like that. If it is what I think it is, it is a retainer that secures the bearing to the shaft that the bearing sits on. You pull the spring out of the hole or groove in the bearing to get the bearing out.

If I am correct, there should be a matching groove on the shaft, but you seem to have got the bearing out without pulling the spring out.

So in answer to the question. Yes it can be saved and after a full strip down a big clean and some very interesting work here is that little Mariner that was laying in the mud at the bottom of the riven Deben running again..... I think it is quite incredible.
