What do you want to sew?


Do I understand it correctly that it died? If so it is worth scrap or pay to haul it away.

If it is functioning then it is worth about $25 US. I bought a very nice Kenmore quality era machine for that, plus it had a ton of sewing accessories. The sewing machine is also not industrial HD or whatever you want to call it. That is a tiny motor on the side. Maybe good for sewing drapes. It probably doesn't have the punch for jeans, or anything requiring a #18 needle or bigger.

If you want to sew boat covers and the like you should really get a walking foot. Something that can handle twin needles would be good although far rarer.

Yup..defo give it a miss SPR unless you like antique stuff.

This is a photo of one of mine. I inherited it from my old mom ..she had it for as long as I can remember and Im over 60 years old. That one looks even older ? They are solid built but they are not heavy duty.. I also got her new one which is the plastic basic bottom of the range model..and the belt and motor stall in both if I get too enthusiastic, when trying to sew four or five layers of tarpaulin. The only good thing about these old metal machines is their weight.. a heavy tarp wont pull them off the table so easy.

Not that I do many tarps etc..but just by coincidence.. at present Im sewing up a tailgate awning for my 4x4 vehicle. I camp out of it a lot and wanted something over the open tailgate to keep the midges out. Im using the cheap and cheerful plastic machine for that.

I use a singer, newer than that and it's not really man enough as you need a walking foot really (if that's what its called).

Mine is great for the seat material I use but still a pain to use at times around tight corners.

But if its free, then give it a go Everyone will take the piss but you'll have cheap seat covers

i made my first boat cover using an old hand powered singer, took a while and my arms killed me from dragging the weight of the cordura material through it whilst turning the handle! had very few problems with the machine itself - if i pulled too hard on the fabric then the needle would miss the hole and break. for strength i used polyamide thread.

What else do you use it for Fester.... the linings of your coffins

no they come pre made and get stapled in once they have been lined with plastic

Festinghouse gets the award for roughing it in this thread. That takes dedication. Hand stitching is always a winner too.

I have an industrial sewing machine that weighs about as much as I do. No walking foot, so feeding it can be a pain. There are some nice features to be had when switching to an industrial machine. I LOVE the auto cut feature. Back press the pedal and snip! The knee material release is awesome too since you can use both hands on the material, and drop the foot down with your right knee. Reverse for me is a handle that is easy to slap into reverse. The one thing I miss is auto threading for the needle. It also only does straight stitching, but I have my medium duty Kenmore sewing machine for everything else.

SPR, look for brands like Juki, Husqvarna, Consew, Berdina, Singer of course, Brother, etc. Most anything HD enough to sew tarps and covers will be mounted to a table. The motor should be mounted under the table and as big as an average males thigh. Most are also continually lubed so moving them can be a pain as they spill oil.
