your images are huge, they could be at least a 10th of the size and no image lost will occur. I do front end web development for Honda , Timeout, Barclays, BBC , Diageo and others but I will do small business projects as well. Lose the massive background image , you cant see it and its just slowing down the page load. Get a big stapline at the top , something catchy. Reduce the copy , make it short as you can , but still getting thepoint across, knowone will read that much unless the site looks as it should, people just dont have confidence in sites that dont look cutting edge, either shopping "unless really cheap" or info gathering. Its basically ok for a first try, you got a way to go yet though. A logo would be great at the top with "no background image!! " If your really nice to me , I may knock you one up for free. Its gonna be a rib silloette and the words though, but it will give a proffesional enough image to instil confidence in your visitors. Good on you for having a stab at it, have you checked it on all the different platforms "windows , mac, andriod , iphone and all the different browsers yet? I didnt think so!!! Good luck. Thats file size , not visual size.

May I thank you for the professional advice you have offered together with your kind willingness to become involved in a revamp of my website.
At this moment, if you don't mind, I would like to defer your offer on the following grounds.
Firstly, it is only an amateur attempt at a website. By “professionalising” it, it would lose that “look”.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the website is only designed for my peers, i.e. people on here, and most of whom have already seen it. If I were going for a wider audience, or selling something, then I agree it could valuably use your undoubted experience.
So once again, I would like to thank you and I hope you are not offended by my reluctance to accept your kind offers of assistance.

Only one comment: "Orkney" please rather than "Orkneys" - there's only one Orkney, and it's a county - no island called Orkney.

"Islands of Orkney" is OK as is "Orkney's islands"

Not wanting to be too pedantic, but it's one of those things that jarrs locally, and folk welcome it being said correctly. And adds to your credibility... And yes, you do see it said incorrectly elsewhere and there is some debate... But safest to say Orkney unless you are a professor of Norse history :o)
