What boating qualifications do you have?

I'm interested to find out if you all have boating qualifications, which ones you have and why do you have them? I'd also like to know how many of you don't have any.

In France there are two motor boat licences, one for going up to 6 nautical milles offshore, the other for going up to 20 nautical milles.

Thanks

What happens if you want to go further than 20 miles?

I've got:

RYA Day Skipper,
RYA Level 2 Powerboat,
RYA VHF SRC.

I did my VHF and Powerboat through the RNLI. The Day Skipper I just felt like doing.
Looking at doing my Advanced Powerboat with Commercial Endorsment.

I'll correct that. It is infact further than 6 NM. I don't know where I got the 20 NM from.

Inshore - "Permis Cotier":
- 25 theoretical questions in a class room (lights, fog horns, fuel consummation, law, safety requirements)
- practical man over board, follow a compass direction, know how to tie a knott, use a fire extinguisher, set off a flare, etc ...

Offshore - "Permis Hauturier" (purely theoretical):
- navigate from a chart
- calculate tides
- night navigation
- safety requirements for offshore navigation

I don't really know what their RYA equivalents are?

You have an rya powerboat 2 this will convert int an International Certificate of Competence ICC which is cool for France, the poerboat 2 can be converted by the rya for a cost of 35:00 or fre f you are a member. There iare details on the RYA website.

I'm presuming your'e not after commercial tickets as these are different

I think for inland /canals you have to take the CEVNI test

http://www.rya.org.uk/infoadvice/boa...s/default.aspx

The good thing about taking you Advanced Powerboat exam is you can pose for photos on boats looking rugged

http://www.rya.org.uk/coursestrainin...es/Level1.aspx

all joking aside their is some good Nav stuff in the APBI and the boat handling training. Theres a very good guy in France called Phil Godwin who runs a school in Nice Oceabpro I think he'd be a good guy to talk to.

http://www.rya.org.uk/coursestrainin...es/Level1.aspx

I know Nantes is a fair slap from Whereever Phil is but issa verry nice there

The only reason I have the paperwork is because a local instructor used to charter my boat for teaching, and I went along for the ride on a couple of occasions.

Much the same as many other posters

RYA Level 2 (Powerboat and Dinghy)
RYA VHF SRC
RYA Day Skipper
RYA Safety Boat Certificate

Of all of them, the Safety Boat ticket was the course I enjoyed the most. Spent a whole weekend blasting round the harbour learning to rescue people from different situations. By the end of the Sunday it'd picked up to Top End F6 gusting F8 and the two dinghies and the one windsurfer that we had out as our casualties were finding hard not to capsize. However all involved (including the dinghy crews) had a great weekend

None. Not required to have any.

Pleasure craft in the US are de facto licensed for a VHF, so that's covered as well. No requirements in my state for a mandatory safety or operations course (a few states do have such requirements); and I probably would have been grandfathered in without the course anyway.

S'funny you look like you might have had longer experience than that

Surely you must have been on a Sunglass and Sun creme selection course before you could go boating in the first pace.: cool:

Whilst I don't advocate training as such I do believe a theory test should be mandatory
