RNLI prefer independent
rescue organisation do not use Life Boat
Of course they do - they're protected their (already very large) bank balance.

There's no other reason than protection of their income (as they see it).

A boat that saves lives is a lifeboat. End of story.

Now, that's an underhand dig against the RNLI. There are many sound reasons for the RNLI to deter organisations and individuals for 'passing off' as being part of or related to their organisation. Just think about it --
(I would not like people to be pretending to be something that they are not.)

and likewise Gentiana we get many people saying they have donated to Independent Lifeboats when they have mistakenly put it in the RNLI colection boxes so works both ways I guess.

A lifeboat is a lifeboat no mater who runs it.

I say support both.......or support your local boat..

All this RNLI vs Independent lifeboat stuff makes me sick both do a role and both do it to their best abilities.

As long as someone is their to pull you out of the brown stuff at the end of the day does it mater who it is.

No, wasn't a dig at them at all.

Of course, if fundraising material isn't clear on either side (RNLI or indie) then that should be address so as with all charity collections the public know exactly who they are donating to. And as Steve says, I'm sure the indies lose out just as much as the RNLI.

But the word "lifeboat" isn't a trademark...

My "bank balance" comment was merely a reflection of the fact that in many years of SAR ops and other meetings with the RNLI, their operational side have never discussed it... their fundraising side, on the other hand, mention it regularly.

But I'm totally with you on the passing off issue - all charities these days suffer too much from conmen and bogus collectors.

I think if you look more closely at this thread its not RNLI vs independent, its actually 2 independant organisiations against each other.

I was meaning about how much the RNLI has etc in the post I followed.

Yes the main thread does seem to be 2 Independent Lifeboats who obviously dont get on, thats life not everyone gets on with everyone..

I also feel airing problems of proffesional organisations in a public forum is not the place to do it though.

In a way, it's only natural - think of the example of an indie boat writing off an engine - for some crews, that means a boat off service and a few weeks of fundraising. Then they see their RNLI neighbours in the same plight, and a new engine arrives from stores on the next van.

I didn't say that attitude was right, merely understandable.

The RNLI is a very slick, very professional organisation - all credit to them for that.

What is evident wherever you are though is the dedication of the crews, whatever the type of organisation.

I do think the indies could benefit from forming a national umbrella assocation though - for example, the only maritime representation on the UKSAR structure at Govt level is the RNLI (apart from HMCG).
