In the briefing we were told not to get involved in any (quote) "punch ups". We were advised to call in the Royal Marines, who will be close at hand, in the event of such an un gentlemany scenario.

Apparently they are rather good at punch ups....

Just been to briefing in london v interesting,anyone else going to a briefing make sure you take a carrier bag for your kit etc.
We are marshalling in the gold area

Wont say who else is doing what as it will spoil your briefing.

I agree with Paul, very interesting meeting, just remember '200 yards' has suddenly becomes a VERY important measurement!!

we're running hourly trips out for the review on the 28th and have a copy of the latest anchorage plan detailing what ships will be where - useful if you're doing charter on the day - if anyone wants a copy of this pm me and send them over...

I don't know about blue lights, I'm having enough trouble working out where to attach the large flag they gave us.... (that we have to give back)

Went to the London meeting on Wednesday and am positioned in the Gold area. Very interesting and as someone said.... lots of goodies to take home!

I will be mooring at Cowes East on Sunday and Monday so if anyone else is, perhaps a few beers may be had Monday evening!

Mark - I see you are - Where are you staying?

And congrats to Gingercoastie.... I entered and heard nothing. Glad you got in. I will keep a look out!

A lot of you have made referance to "dipping one's ensign". I understand that your supposed to do it in the presence of a more senior ship and that they'll do it back, but what exactly is a "dip". If it is what it sounds like it should be (simply lowering it then hoisting it again) what should I do if I want/need (?) to dip as my ensign is cable-tied onto a pole....

I am a bit miffed, now I am not marshalling I do not get all my freebies, just a green and yellow flag. Maybe Richard will still let me have them as they were ordered in my size

And on dipping ensigns from Tim.... If a British registered vessel meets one of her Majesty's, the 'dipping' - raising and lowering - may go on as a jesture of goodwill and respect. I expect Ellen MacArthur dipped when she met a Royal Navy ship on her round the world trip.... Don't know if Alan P did any dipping on his (Did you Alan?).... but I don't think there will be much dipping going on in the Solent. The flag on Illustrious would be going up and down all day with the thousands of yachts expected! So my ensign will stay on its laccy band!

I have just got back from a weekend at Calshot.
On Friday we went into Pompey Harbour - no one told us
that there is a small boat channel(its not marked on our chart)
so we blithely followed a ferry in and got our wrist slapped by the harbourmaster. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
The point of our trip was to find a good viewing point for the forthcoming review. Just west of Gilkicker there seems to be a small beach which is only accessible from the sea. It has a solid stone wall with windows set in it at the back and is about 200 yards wide.
Before we get "shot at dawn" for trespassing on Mod Property etc. Can someone tell me if this is private as it seems to be an ideal viewing point?

No it's not private.. It will however be the busiest point on the Solent from which to watch the review.. It is the closest peeps will be able to get, whilst staying on the mainland.. It also has numerous car parks with-in a 200m walk..

Better get up early if we're going there?
But we are small enough to beach the boat if need be. According to the chart there are no obstructions around. We reckon to get there for around 10am watch The Review then into Portsmouth Harbour after Her Maj has finished. Late Lunch in the Jolly Sailor at Hardway and back out for the Son et Lumiere followed by the Fireworks?

Just watch out for the "Monkton Blocks" on the other side of Gilkicker - I believe that they are just under the surface at low springs.
