Speeds for Insurance

When you apply for an insurance quote how do you decide the speed of your Rib?
Is it full speed fully laden, one person on board, normal cruising speed(whatever that is),???

There is a huge difference on quotes between 40kts and 35kts.

Allso some companies are refusing to quote because of engine size.

I would have thought the max possible speed, ie no load one person on board.
The engine size shouldn't be a problem unless its bigger than what the rated size is?

I've always used the max design speed as quoted by the manufacturer.

If you know the WOT rpm, gearbox ratio & prop pitch you can make an educated guess as to the max theoretical speed.

Is an insurance company going to take an educated guess or would that be brought up if a claim is made to give them a reason not to pay out?

If I had to guess then I would guess 35kts coz the insurance is cheaper...

With 6 divers and 6 sets of kit I normally cruise at 25-30kts to conserve fuel but I'm sure that's not what they are asking.

Tell them the maximum speed the boat does with one person on board.

Have been involved in claims involving back injury where the boat was clearly faster than the assured said it was at the time of taking out the policy. Result - insurers turned down the claim.

If you have an accident and insurers appoint a surveyor/assessor who knows his ribs, he'll know that a 5.8m Tornado with a 150hp Optimax will easily do more than 40 knots.
If you've said it only does 35 knots it's likely you'll not be insured.

Try Porthcawl Insurance Brokers. They know their RIBs and will be able to place you with an appropriate underwriter.

My Ribcraft 585 with a DF150 was arounnd 45kn. I assume yours will be similar.

Generally anything up to 50knts will be oK ( assuming you pay the price! ) over 50 and quite rightly underwriters get twitchy - much like a lot of boats and thier helms at that speed !

Spot on Peter,this is THE main limiting criteria as far as most RIB Insurers are concerned.
