Scillies RIB MAIB report

Always useful to read - learn by other's mistakes.

http://www.maib.gov.uk/publications/...008/wizard.cfm

They are lucky the RIB was an Ocean Dynamics with an aluminium hull and jet drive. The boat hit a rock at about 18kts - the skipper having just slowed as he sensed something wasn't right. He hit his head on the wiper motor and was concussed - other crew members bruised.

The main finding was he relied too much on the GPS - it was dark and no visual references. also he didn't use his radar for extra conformation.

To sum up - watch where you are going!!!

The accident occurred while ferrying workers to a nearby Island (St Agnes) from St Marys at approx 5.30 in the morning.
The boat owner had not been drinking. In general our boatman have an impeccable safety record.Particularly when you consider how many hazards we have around these islands.
But, you can never be too careful and lessons have been learnt!

The skill of the boatmen on Scilly have always impressed me with thier skill and attention to safety I wasn't trying to knock them in any way .

The report lead me to think the skipper was a contractor who had passed a local test in order to do the job hence my comment .
