Rib patches and repairs

Hi all

Sorry if in the wrong section, but I have found the source of the leak on my rib.
Under the nose protection there are loads of old patches which are leaking.
My question is this.
1. How do you know which is the correct material to match yours (mines a Narwhal old thing)
2. Is it every worth buying a repair kit off ebay.
3. Is there any special tools required to fit the patch (i.e rollers)

It's Hypalon. I've posted a few times how to repair Hypalon patches so I'd do a search. i alos believe there are good instructions on the TIDEL (Paul Tilley) website You need to get the cladding off and repair the patches prperly by removing all tracesd of the old patch and glue.

If it's a Narwhal it most likely going to be PVC.

The boat is PVC, so you will have fun cleaning the glue off! (not).

Those patches look like someone has tried to repair the seam, quite a lot of the Narwhals are famous for being badly made in the seam department, mainly the earlier ones and if your boat falls in to this category then you could be opening a bit of a Pandoras box!

If I was going to tackle this job I would see whether those patches are on there to stop air leaking out of the seams first. Then if they are I think it is maybe a job for the pros unless you are confident in your rib repair skills. If they are just simple air leaks nothing to do with the seam then there is no reason not to do the job yourself. (I keep putting myself out of a job).

You will need 2 part adhesive and I am not sure this is the stuff you will find on ebay?

Can anyone tell me what 2 part glue I need, where I can get PVC repair strips and possibly a link to a patch repair thread.

I still might I just wanted to identify every problem and work out how much it will cost and how much time it will take to do.
I have found some problems with the engine drive and water pump, but I was just pleased I found the air leak and was interested what is involved in the repair.

(Im kind of giving myself ammunition for the guy when he gives me his price), basically if he has it back, it will sit in his field until the day he scraps it in about 5 years time. I am quite handy in repairing things but want to buy it cheap so that I dont have to worry about the repair costs.

I also found that the steering box was damaged so took appart and repaired but there are missing bits. I think its all the small missing bits that are going to be the end for it as I know bits are missing (I just dont know what being a newbie!!)

All sorted and dandy, I don't reckon it's more than £8-900 worth at best, so base your offer around that. You'll be unpleasantly surprised how much you could sink into this boat to make it seaworthy and roadworthy.

You could stand well back and offer him £100.

Just had a good look and it does look like the seam of the tube is leaking.

I think its time I said enough is enough. I hate to admit defeat but what with not knowing what little bits are missing, and how much repairs like the seams would cost to repair, let aloine finding someone in the Bristol area that does them.

I know there is issues with the engine also.

I already have offered him £150 and he didnt like it much, but there is no way Im going any higher, as I keep finding other bits that need to be done.

What is everyones honest advice?
If I can buy it for £150 then do the work (I dont mind grafting)
Or just take it back and dump it on his drive and thank him for the experience? lol

before you give in-since you seem keen on it.

why don't you ask him what is his lowest price. assume that is what you will pay before you haggle again. then add on a cost to repair. i'm sure someone on here could give you a guide price that will give you a ball park.

take the above figure and see what you can get for that money that is ready to use. i would suspect you will get a tidy little boat for what your going to end up throwing on this one.

take it back - tell him you're not interested and just hope he doesn't claim it was in better nick before you started tinkering

if he says he'll give it to you for nothing then maybe think about it (but beware there's still a shed load of money and work to do - and half finished with 500 spent on it you won't stand much chance of getting your money back).

For £150 + possible repair work you could probably get yourself an ok-ish condition old searider (4m) with enough left over for a couple of rolls of gaffa tape, if you shop around.

Thanks guys, I will let the guy know I dont want it as I think it will cost too much to put right and see what he says.

To be honest, I have seen some right wrecks going on Ebay for £700 + by people like me that have the idea or dream and end up with too much to take on, I would imagine some of these boats just get flogged on every 6 months for someone else to take on!! Atr least it has given me an insight into the do's donts and what to look out for.

If you want a project, go for a 4m Searider. Reason being, the SR is the Landrover 90 of ribbing, in as much that, the SR will always hold it's money and the more you spend, the more it will be worth (Try to avoid the Bedajim 'Trigger's Broom' scenario

), within reason. Right now, SRs are making very good money, so you'll need to search for a snip, but they are out there.
