Osprey 5.0 with a 55 Suzuki

Would this setup be sluggish? Not looking for a speed machine. Just something to buzz around yachting fleets taking photos with some 4 up family usage.

Anyone got any opinions on this one? Looking at buying an Osprey 5.0 but wondering whether it may be a bit underpowered with a 55.

Probally in the 20+ knots, dont imagine it would be super quick.

Andy - the problem is that the vast majority of people on here are rather keen on top speed. So whilst that boat may well be fine for the application you plan - it is probably a bit underpowered to most people on here. A sea trial is probably the way to find out. I'm sure lightly loaded it will be fine for snapping pics of yachts; depending on how "heavy" the family is (4 people could be anything from about 180kg to 400+kg) - you might find it less inspiring for family cruising - likewise what keeps a 5 yr old happy (in terms of speed, responsiveness etc) is different from a 15 yr old.

Not a direct comparison, but my Humber came with a yam 55. As Cam says, top speed was about 25 Knots. As Pol says, "sluggish" is all relative.

Anything abouve 20 knots cruising asi going to be unomfortable anyway in a 5m boat, and for your photographic escapades, you could get a slightly lower pitched prop - then you get a bit more "out the hole" grunt, at the loss of top speed, however chasing yachts I wouldn't think that's going to be hugely important, unless of course you are chasing skiffs!

hmm yes probably a little underpowered, my valiant 5.2M has a 70hp on, think maximum engine it can take is 100hp.

I was driving a vallient 490 with a 75, they are rated to 80hp

As the previous replies have said, it will be a tad on the sluggish side. However, just give it a sea trial if you can. I have a 98 5mtr Tornado, not a viking so its pretty light and it goes OK with a 60hp 2S merc but when I replace ,I would want to go with a privately imported 90 2S yam. However, that is a few years away! What you do need to be aware of, is that powering to the boats limit, particularly a small boat means that in inexperienced hands things can go horribly amiss very quickly. ie letting the other half drive, loaning it to the brother inlaw etc.

The way you lot are talking I'm going to have to beef up my transom - My 60 doesn't sound big enough.......

I've had 2 ribs that would be positively lethargic for this lot. SR4 with a 25, and my current 5.3 with it's 55 / current 60.

Put the 60 on the SR
