Max engine weight Ribcraft 5.0

Hey ,

I have a ribcraft 5.0 and at the stern there is mentionned the max allowed HP is 90 HP , with an maximum engine weight of 158 kg . This is exactly the specifications of a Suzuki 90 HP.

For the moment I have a yamaha 60 HP , and I really like the Yamaha's , so my next engine must be a yamaha.
But here in europe ( netherlands, and belgium) the only produce the 80 HP our the 100 HP, and there weight is 170 kg.
I would like to go for the 80 HP yamaha, with a weight of 170 kg, ( my 60 hp = 115 kg) , Does anyone have also a ribcraft 5m rib with this type of engine ? of will the 170 kg be to heavy at the back of my boat.

So summerized I want to know if 170 kg engine weight at the back of my ribcraft 5.0 will be to much?
If someone knows someone also with a 5.0m ribcraft and an engine weight about the 170 kg , than I would be pleased to hear it and the findings about it.

I somehow doubt 12kg would really make much difference in practical terms. I'm very suprised they were so specific on the max weight in the first place though and didn't just round it up to 160kg. I would think the risk you take is invalidating any warranty and also your insurance. It could also be a problem if you have an accident and it turns out your boat was out of specification.

Yes indead. And I regrett it, because now I not feeling quit 100% good about buying a 80 HP.
My opinion is , that my 60 hp is much to powerless , I need a minimum of about 5000 rpm's to go on a normal speed, and then I have almost nothing left to bring on the extra speed you sometimes want.

In attachment you can see the plate of the specifications at the back of the boat.

I asked ribcraft , and I have spoken 2 men .

one told me , the weight would not be the problem , but the 100 HP (with the same weight of the 80 HP) would be a problem due to assurance and stuff,
The other one sold me , on 5m sport ribs they reduced a 70 HP suzuki to 60HP becaus it was so heavy at the stern. But I have a professional boat , not the sport, but the dimensions are the same.

So see , it is not that easy I find,

Therefore I hope someone also with a ribcraft rib reads this, and has an engine about that weight more or less...

Your Ribcraft plate states max 90hp and 158kg...Yamaha only do 80 or 100 and they are over-weight you say...Suzuki do a 90hp at 155kg...sounds like you should be talking to Suzuki.

For what it's worth...we have a Ribcraft 5.3 with the 155kg 90hp Suzuki on the back. Fuel consumption is very good and we can just about pull 40 knots...

Someone will be along soon to say you can have it all with a second hand 2 stoke 90hp Yam

matt h fitted one to a brand new RC5 and was very happy with it.

DF90 would be a good choice, or a 90 e-tec is also within the weight limit.

Why the fixation with Yam? Your Yam 60 has a Mercury powerhead......

Because my instruments and stuff are all from yamaha. And I know when something is wrong about the engine, I have spareparts within 2 days. I know indead the Suzuki is the best solution, but still I'd hoped fot a yamaha, they are so sillent

The same problem with the Suzuki DF90, only available in UK...
Suzuki in Belgium starts with 60hp, the next engine is the DF100..

@ Leapy, no 2 stroke for me ;-)

Ow, I have to correct myself, the 90 is well-being possible to deliver here, so that would maybe still be an option

I think indead I have not that much number of options, and the 90 HP suzuki is a good alternative.

I think I go for the new Yamaha 70 HP , the engine weight is about 119 kg , and its preformance is better than the 60 HP

Sounds like a lot of time, money and effort for 10hp This is only 10hp more than an engine that you said was was "much too powerless" and 20hp less than the boat will take.

Are you sure?
