Slight thread drift, but I recently asked both Fareham and Gosport Councils why they are doing more to attract short term boats to there areas. I suggested to Gosport Council that they create a free short term mooring pontoon just south of the ferry terminal so folks could go ashore and spend money in Gosport. They replied saying they will think about.

Fareham Council sent the following:

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your email.

With regard to your continued interest in the visitor moorings I have
forwarded your email to Mrs Rance in our Leisure department as she deals
with the overall Policy management of the Creek, my role is the
administration of the existing moorings. Any policy change with regard
to the moorings would be instigated by Leisure Services in the first
instance and then subsequently administered by myself.

boats out on the Solent every weekend, why are they not coming up to
Fareham?
What we need in Fareham is walk on visitor pontoons, I suggest between
the gravel yard and Fairweather Marine along the harbour wall.

How do folk pay for an overnight mooring, wel how about a car parking
machine, afterall they work in the carpark on the other side of the A27.
What happens is folk then visit our town. They spend money in the shops
and resturants etc.

If you want to see how well it can be done then look to Brittany, all
the local harbours are run by the local council. they provide excellent
services for locals and visitors alike because they know it pays.

We have a great asset, why don't we use it?

Dear Sirs
I and two other RIBs attempted to go to the Lightship for a beer and sandwich on Saturday 4th July , we were greeted by a charming young girl who informed us that we would have to pay £8 per boat just for a short stop . I did try to negotiate with her to see if we could save something as we were going to be there for less than an hour . She was unable to help as she had no authority to do so. We decided that £24 on top of our beer was unacceptable so left and crossed to Gunwharf where we were greeted by an equally charming member of staff who allowed us to berth at no cost whilst we had our beers.
I realise that you have to run a business but I feel that you should have a’ short stay’ charge to enable the very many people who would like to stop off at the Lightship for a quick drink to do so without such a large charge .
I am sure that there would be a significant number of loyal customers who would use the Lightship . We are based in Chichester Harbour and often head into Portsmouth Harbour on our way to and from Cowes and the western Solent . The choice of turning left or right as we get to Ballast pile is all to easy to make at the moment .I have copied this to The Lightship as I am sure they are only to aware of the missed customers heading over to Gunwharf.'

I wonder why you all think the Marina is doing anything unreasonable? Surely its for the Lightship management to have negotiated their berthing arrangements so that their guests get a discount etc. If they haven't done this perhaps they don't want customers who are only coming for a short spell and drinking a cup of coffee (compared to a full meal where £8 is less of a "penalty"). In either case I'm surprised you would see it as the Marina's fault to fix - do they profit from increased sales that the Lightship would get?

I think you'll find GW will be tightening up from now on when it comes to short stays. Likewise my experaince of Deane and Reddyhoff is that they're not too good when it comes to "discounts".

If you really want to go to the Lightship and don't want to pay you could always park on the Haslar Marina slipway pontoon - doesn't cost a penny then its just a five minute walk to the Lightship.

I don't think it is unreasonable I just think it is stupid turning away customers who would make the Lightship a more viable enterprise , they struggle at present and there are a lot of people who would be happy to drop in for a swift one , but not at £8 a go !Would you pay £8 to park at your local for a pint on your way home ?

Not realy very nice for people who launch and recover their boats to find 2 or three boats rafted up whilst crew go for a meal or swift one is it?

Anyway, you won't be given access to the Marina if you haven't got a berth.
